This week, in Elon Musk's lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI, the jury saw video of a sworn deposition from Mira Murati, OpenAI's former CTO. Elaborating on her comments in our latest @newyorkermag story, she alleged that Altman was not always truthful, gave different executives conflicting information, and pitted them against each other.

Over the course of an 18-month investigation, we traced the yearslong history of these claims from Altman's colleagues, and looked at what this tells us about integrity in AI leadership, and how it affects all of us.

After the release of one ChatGPT model, an OpenAI researcher e-mailed members of the board: “OpenAI has been going off the rails on its mission,” he wrote. “We are prioritizing the product and revenue above all else, followed by AI capabilities, research and scaling, with alignment and safety coming third.”

He continued, “Other companies like Google are learning that they should deploy faster and ignore safety problems.”

Many researchers fear that powerful A.I. could fall out of “alignment” with human values, with catastrophic results: say, following an instruction to clean up the environment by eliminating its greatest polluter, the human race.

But our recent @newyorkermag investigation documents how some researchers at the company have raised concerns about safety being sidelined.

When Sam Altman was reinstated at OpenAI after an outside law firm investigation, no report about what was found was ever released. That’s because none was written.

After OpenAI’s board fired Altman in 2023 for an alleged pattern of deception and manipulation, he fought his way back—and eventually agreed to a review supervised by two new board members selected in close consultation with him.

Those board members enlisted WilmerHale to conduct it. But six people close to the inquiry alleged that it seemed designed to limit transparency. Some said investigators initially didn’t contact important sources, others felt there wasn’t sufficient effort to ensure anonymity. One employee said: “Everything pointed to the fact that they wanted to find the outcome, which is to acquit him.”

The findings were limited to oral briefings, which were not necessarily exonerating on the matters that got Altman fired. One person close to the inquiry said: “The review did not conclude that Sam was a George Washington cherry tree of integrity.”

When Altman said he believed all new board members received those oral briefings, a person with direct knowledge called that “an absolute, outright lie.”

@ronanfarrow says Sam Altman and others have been able to weaken AI safety mechanisms because so many in the industry don’t have the moral courage to stand up for what they think is right in the face of pressure and profits: “This industry is truly full of people who just do not stand by their convictions.” #ai #openai #tech #business #samaltman

During the Biden administration, Sam Altman withdrew from a process in which he had been exploring getting a security clearance to join classified AI policy discussions. Staffers at the RAND Corporation, which helped coordinate the process, were skeptical he could get a clearance due to his extensiveforeign entanglements—one noted that he’d been raising “hundreds of billions of dollars” from foreign governments.

Why? To build AI at the scale and speed he wanted, Altman needed money that few entities on earth possess—and the company considered extraordinary plans to achieve this.

According to internal documents, OpenAI once considered auctioning off access to advanced AI models to governments, deliberately playing world powers against each other. A junior researcher recalled thinking: “This is completely fucking insane.”

Everyone is talking about @newyorker journalist @ronanfarrow's in-depth report about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman — and why he was fired in 2023 before returning to his position only days later.

Ronan spent 18 months working on the story (which he co-authored with Andrew Marantz), including reading hundreds of pages of documents and conducting more than a dozen interviews with the CEO himself, plus many more with his current and former employees, OpenAI board members, and other friends and enemies of Altman's.

Needless to say, there's a lot to unpack, so I spoke one-on-one with Ronan about what he learned and why it matters. Watch the full interview on my Substack channel, or at the link in my bio.

"I interviewed, at the time, every living Sec. of State about the decline of diplomacy and militarism taking over American foreign policymaking. This is a nadir of that, that I think none of them could have expected at the time."

We spent 18 months investigating Sam Altman and OpenAI for @newyorkermag. We reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos and documents. More than 100 people talked.

What we found: allegations of repeated deception to board members and executives. Safety commitments that were made publicly and abandoned internally. A web of financial entanglements stretching from Silicon Valley to Gulf autocracies. And the story of how people who tried to stop him were outmaneuvered.

The full investigation is out now. Link in bio.
