📏 Raphaël Zarka intends to use his residency to familiarise himself with the work of Japanese modernist artist Masakazu Horiuti and conduct research into the use of geometry in Japanese art, prior to a joint exhibition with Horiuti which the KYOCERA Museum of Art in Kyoto is planning for 2027. Through Horiuti, Zarka wishes to examine Japanese uses of parallel perspective (axonometry), in which there is no vanishing point, unlike western representations of geometric spaces used since the Renaissance, that have been governed by the rules of a central perspective. The use of parallel perspective raises compositional challenges which Japanese artists have experimented with for hundreds of years.

📅 In residence until the end of July 2026 !

: SHOWING AT THEMA - RAPHAËL ZARKA

Raphaël Zarka (b. 1977, Montpellier) develops a sculptural practice investigating the migration of geometric forms across disciplines, epochs, and contexts. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and former Villa Medici resident (2010-2011), he draws upon sources from Galilean mechanics to crystallographic models, tracing how learned forms persist through popular usage. His work—encompassing sculpture, photography, video, and publication: constructs rigorous dialogues between mathematical inquiry, art history, and material culture.

Central to his methodology is the concept of the « instrumental sculpture, » designed for active use, particularly in skateboarding practice. Projects like « Topographie anecdotée du skateboard » (2008) and « Cycloïde Piazza » (Centre Pompidou, 2024) evidence his interest in skateboarding as a relational model for artistic production. By rendering geometric abstractions practicable, Zarka creates sculptural propositions that function as sites of embodied knowledge and lived experience.

#OnView at Modernis Room, at Luciana Brito Galeria, “Gnomonic Woods”, French artist Raphaël Zarka’s second exhibition in Brazil. On the main wall, the artist presents “Kratzer” (2025), a wall painting created exclusively for the show. Designed to represent the location of the city of São Paulo, the painting features transverse lines that not only represent the city’s latitude but also allude to the clock hands, which on sundials are called gnomons, or shadow hands. The pastel hues evoke the gradient of shadows, interrupted by two smaller paintings depicting the sundials, produced using machetes, paint, and plaster.

Must See.

Today was the opening of my second solo at Luciana Brito gallery in Sao Paolo, but my first in their space located in a modernist house by architect Rino Levi with gardens conceived by Levi and Brule Marx. I can’t tell you how happy I was to be back in SP after many years and to show in such a great gallery. I was also lucky enough to be staying at @projetofidalga , an amazing residency and exhibition program run by the ever generous and hyperactive Sandra Cinto and Albano Afonso. Thank you so much to everyone who made my stay incredible, in particular, and for very different reasons, Adriano Casanova and Silvia Gurfein.
I will miss São Paulo so much!
Better photos to come very soon.

Special thanks to @rafaxcarneiro and @joules_and_joules without whom the wall painting won’t have been the same and to Mauro who made a great job painting it.

And all the team @lucianabritogaleria and @projetofidalga
