when my older brother barrett would go to summer camp for 2 weeks i would spend the entire time decorating his room for when he got back. i would hang construction paper wreaths all over his bedroom and when he would come home and open the door i would flicker the lights and press play on “celebration” by kool & the gang.

i got a flash back to that last week when setting up for me and nico’s birthday party and it made me smile. idk it made me realize the parts i love about myself have always been there. i love my friends, i love hosting for them, i love streamers and i love the life I’ve built.

I used to always say Louisiana wasn’t built for me.

The thing is, I had a very lonely childhood here, constantly reminded that I was different, but not realizing there were other options outside of my current reality.

I’ve always hated the lack of control I had in moving on, and this week I wanted to redefine these foundations myself, having agency to build new memories while appreciating past ones under the lens of who I am now.

I smiled a lot this week. I sang Diana Ross on the porch with my mom, watched the sunrise over the bayou, heard the sounds of zydeco, hugged my wonderful family and friends.

Dropping me off at the airport, my mom asked what was different this time. Thinking on it, I guess I was finally ready to try.
