Southeast Asia’s ocean sustains over 700 million people—and Asia Pacific produces 89% of the world’s aquaculture. Yet less than 30% of the region’s ocean is formally protected. Overfishing, habitat degradation and data gaps continue to undermine effective ocean management, while monitoring vast stretches of coastline remains costly and labor-intensive.

Closing the gap between knowledge and action requires innovation that can make conservation faster, cheaper and scalable.

Today, The Nature Conservancy, YKAN and Newlab announced three cutting-edge pilots selected through the Global Ocean Innovation Challenge—an initiative to accelerate technology solutions that address critical bottlenecks in ocean conservation.

From autonomous monitoring to AI-driven fisheries management, these technologies aim to close the gap between protection goals and real-world enforcement. Insights from these pilots will inform opportunities for scaling global ocean conservation work.

This year’s program includes two fellowship tracks: Art + Technology, supported by the John S. and James L. @knightfdn, and Art + Health, in partnership with @henryfordhealth.

Four fellows will be selected in total. Each will receive a $30,000 unrestricted award, access to fabrication facilities, mentorship, and the chance to work inside an innovation ecosystem shaped by artists, technologists, and civic partners.
