What's up folks! @negrolith and I are so excited to launch a second iteration of afroludix. We're seven weeks into the pilot class and it's been such a joy.

We're starting on Sat 6/27, and enrollment is open today via bit.ly/afroludix. That page also has more info for anyone interested! It's a ten week course that combines critical analysis and rule-system design (both ludic and not) and culminates in the presentation of a final project / WIP. Reach out if you have any questions!

Clarke @negrolith about his practice, which integrates sedimentology, coastal geomorphology, black electronic music studies, blues epistemologies, ethnomusicology, regional environmental history, and more. Clarke shares his early influences, from his grandparents’ gospel radio to video games, and explains deltaic thinking, a framework connecting black music’s social histories with geological processes. They discuss blues epistemologies, the relationship between blackness and ecologies under colonial pressures, and the deep time concepts in techno music. Ryan C. Clarke (@negrolith) is a tonal geologist from the southeastern banks of the Mississippi. His work in the field of expanded earth science proposes counter-architectures of sociality based on the deltaic processes that built the land his home resides on. His writings and lectures have been published by E-flux, Rhizome, Terraforma, Harvard, and Dweller Electronics where he is a co-editor and curator.

In partnership with @ile.ife.neworleans in New Orleans, Highlander Center presents a free screening of “MR. SOUL” by Melissa Haizlip (2018)

In 1968, America’s first Black variety show, “SOUL!,” helmed by producer and host Ellis Haizlip, premiered on public television. The pioneering series ran for five years, cementing itself as not only a vehicle to celebrate African American artistry, community, and culture but also as a platform for political expression and a powerful force in the fight for social justice.

Mr. SOUL! portrays in exquisite detail a revolutionary time in American culture and entertainment through vibrant archival footage and interviews with numerous Black luminaries who appeared on “SOUL!,” or were impacted by it. While chronicling the journey of “SOUL!,” Mr. SOUL! recounts the life and contributions of the late Haizlip, who was steeped in the New York City arts community prior to creating the show. Ellis quickly stepped into the role of host of his creation, where his earnest demeanor, low-key interviewing style, and his passion for the Black artistic community and their works—including books, the spoken word, music, film, and dance—culminated in a show that depicted the Black experience in a bold and unapologetic way. Haizlip’s creation shifted the media focus from what was then uniformly images of inner-city poverty and violence, to instead shine a light on the vibrant contemporary Black Arts Movement.

For the 2025 Triple Canopy Symposium, Triple Canopy and Roulette convened an ensemble of improvising musicians, thinkers, and writers to consider bass as a frequency, political metaphor, and technology in and beyond Black music. Ryan C. Clarke (@negrolith) connected bass to coded forms of communication in Black history—like the talking drum—and used a DJ system to manipulate the group’s performance. The one-night-only band was made up of cellist Dorothy Carlos (@dorothycarlos), drummer Buz Donald (@indybuz), bassist Brandon Lopez (@bantlopez), and experimental musician Kwami Winfield (@_._kwami_._).

The workshop will address and collaboratively perform various black patterns to showcase how we as a people encrypt pre-Atlantic liberation technologies inside an ethnomathematic as an act of collective self-expression and fugitivity.
