Little Sean - probably 6 years old. Mate, I’m sorry for what you’re about to go through across the next 20 years or so. You’re going to be hurt by everyone that was meant to keep you safe. You’ll enter adulthood having internalised all the harm, equating that bad things keep happening because you must be intrinsically bad. That wound will fester placing your life in danger. But your guardian angel will be a psychologist that purposefully opened her practice in a low socioeconomic area - and her business model allows for those who can’t afford it to never pay beyond the Medicare rebate. She stems the bleeding & eventually you are brave enough to dedicate yourself to the thing that lights your world on fire. You’re 22, you’ve never played an instrument or taken a class. You always had a way with words but the musicality takes a long time. You’re 28, it’s been six years, you’ve done a couple of cool things but you’re about to enter a two year writers block that strips away the only thing that tethered you to existence. Yet at this point in time, you meet the love of your life & you begin to find some value in other parts of your life that you once never conceived possible. Two years pass, you worry you’ll never write a song again - but it’s at the point you accept that there’s truly nothing to lose - that you breakthrough.

You set yourself a goal so lofty with the idea that you must achieve something grandiose to justify all the suffering - to balance the scales and make your life make sense.

But now you’re here, the void is filled and you realise that not only did you survive, heal and not succumb to your circumstances. You are helping people who have suffered in the ways you have to feel a little less alone. Pieces you created from the depths of your pain are reflected back to you as art that has saved the life of the person you’re speaking to. You can’t accept that for the first few years - but then your music takes you to the other side of the world and you hear it again and again.

You accept all that has been for you realise it was never about balancing pain with glory. It is about paying forward the actions of your psychologist. You are okay.
