“Event Horizon” - a dive into Sony’s Alpha Universe.

In nature, there is a phenomenon that has the power to capture light and to freeze time. Some call them singularities, some call them holes in space-time, others just call them “Black Holes.”

Lit by the light of a supermoon and a campfire, we used the astonishingly sensitive A7S III to capture the poetic parallels between Black Holes and the act of photography.

The idea of shooting with available light… at night…. was daunting. But after extensive testing and long conversations with @sevagchahinian we landed on a location and a date with a coinciding supermoon (A full moon that coincides with perigee, making it the brightest of all full moons). We shot @michellefarrahhuang (amazing human being) on a cold, windy, but most importantly CLOUDLESS night in California’s Alabama Hills.

To me, night exteriors have always been interesting because in general, they always look fake. When you watch a movie, daytime interiors and exteriors as well as night time exteriors all seem to intuitively match up with my experience of being a human being with eyes. But as soon as you cut to a night time exterior, it almost always feels false. This film was an attempt to make night look the way night feels to me.

Post-production was a deep dive into the physics of black holes with @stephenburchell along with a shocking amount of research that went into visualizing what a mini-black hole would look like in a terrestrial setting.

A year ago this week, Los Angeles took to the streets in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. Cities across the world joined in solidarity to protest the ongoing police injustices that occur globally. But for America, a nation built on slavery, the hour of reckoning is still long overdue. It’s debt far from paid. 

This film chronicles Los Angeles and its participation in this extraordinary global protest.
