This year’s grad season trend? Booing speakers who glaze AI. The reaction reflects the skeptical attitude young people have towards this technology: according to a new Axios Harris Poll, roughly 42% of Gen Z say artificial intelligence will harm job opportunities and wages for people like them.

This mood isn’t unwarranted. Numerous studies have concluded that young workers are the most vulnerable to AI disruption, with one Stanford study finding that “early-career workers (ages 22-25) in the most AI-exposed occupations have experienced a 13% relative decline in employment.” Until our government produces a real plan to ensure the rise of AI doesn’t just enrich tech oligarchs while leaving everyone else to fight over fewer opportunities and unleashing untold amounts of climate-warming pollution, the boos will keep coming.
