As I approach NYFW I sit drained by the ideals that encourage the degradation of the art-form for profit. I asked myself
Why I should decentralize fashion portrait photography?
Well here’s my answer or perspectives.
1.Because the artform deserves to belong to everyone, not just agencies, galleries, or elite institutions. Portraiture has always been about people, but too often it gets locked behind industry standards and commercial expectations. Decentralizing the practice protects photography as a hobby and creative outlet, a way for anyone to experiment, play, and tell stories without permission.
2.It also refreshes perspective. When we open portraiture to landscapes, everyday environments, and unconventional mediums, we escape repetition and predictability. We begin to see not just the individual, but the worlds that shape them.
3. it’s a necessary act of resistance. Portrait and fashion photography are not free from bias—they’ve long been shaped by elitism, eurocentric beauty standards, and systems of exploitation.
Decentralization creates space for new voices, new aesthetics, and narratives that honor communities too often ignored.
4. Lastly promoting landscape, street, and other forms of photography decentralizes portraiture by broadening its scope. Landscape ties identity to place, street photography affirms everyday truth and accessibility, and alternative genres expand the visual language of the medium. Together, they resist narrow industry standards and the socioeconomic barriers that privilege certain aesthetics, protecting photography as a diverse, living artform.
At the end of the day I love portrait photography, I have a deep love for fashion, and an endless infatuation with with what it says about the world around us. However there’s way more to be said and you don’t need a mouth in frame to say a thousand words.
