Meet Jan Szulew, a Lead Software Engineer who has been fascinated by maps since childhood, sparked by a passion for public transport and urbanism.

Jan joined HERE last year, bringing 15+ years of geospatial experience. And when he explores cities, he does it differently. While most people focus on the headline landmarks, Jan looks for the places where life actually happens: living districts, public spaces, and the everyday routes that connect them.

His go-to method is rail transport, because it brings structure to exploration. But in Paris, much of the rail network runs underground. So Jan found his own structure. He recreated a walking route that traces a GPS track in the shape of France, turning two days on foot into a piece of map art.

🦄 Fun fact: Jan also shaped public transport experiences back home, including a Łódź tram hub he nicknamed “Stajnia Jednorożców” (“Unicorn Stable”), a name that went viral and is now widely used.

Turns out curiosity doesn’t just help us navigate the world. Sometimes, it leaves a mark on the map itself. ✨
