I hopped on the boat with @salteeferry and 20 minutes later we were swapping dry land for a tiny dinghy, seaweed, and a very dramatic wet landing. Yes, you may end up walking through water up to your knees. Yes, you should absolutely bring a towel. π
Once youβre on Great Saltee, itβs pure adventure. No cafΓ©s. No toilets. No shelter. Just cliffs, ocean, birds, and one of the best little hikes Iβve done in Ireland. These birdβs are full of personality and so incredible to see up close. π€©
Thereβs a beautiful two-mile loop around the island, but please walk carefully. Puffins are ground-dwelling birds and make their nests in burrows, which means itβs really easy to accidentally trample their homes, crush eggs or injure the birds.

This hike is super easy to do from London. We met at 8am and were back at London Victoria by 7pm after a leisurely afternoon drink and bite to eat in a local pub in Seaford. We got super lucky with the weather βοΈ The views the whole way along the cliffs are unreal. There are plenty of spots to stop for lunch, go for a swim, or just say thank you to the powers that be for landing you in such an incredible location.
To get here there are a couple of ways to do your train ticket - you can either grab a return to Eastbourne then get a single from Seaford to Lewes on your way back from Seaford, or if you book 3 days in advance you can get a day saver ticket on Southern Rail that covers all journeys on the Southern Railway and covers both your journeys for around Β£25.
The beach at the end is a cool place to have a swim if youβre brave and the weather is behaving itself.
π¨ Remember -leave no trace, be kind to the animals, and bring all your rubbish back with you. Stay on the track and stay away from the cliff edges. Theyβre super exposed and the drop down will be your last. β°οΈ
