This project focuses on the relationship between public space and the transgender community. Historically, binary gender theory has influenced architectural design by reinforcing notions of fixed gender binaries and traditional gender roles. This design is reflected in all aspects of spatial design, including public toilets and public bathrooms. These spaces segregate spaces by simply distinguishing between male and female and reinforcing binary gender norms, which are unfriendly to the transgender community. The element of ”doors“ is emphasised in this project, as they allow for privacy and a sense of security in such spaces.
