Greg Pallet: On Cracking

Some viewers have questioned why I occasionally build my hanging dioramas on canvas, and to be totally honest the real reason is that at one point I had a bunch of unused or poorly used canvases lying around. I used to paint a lot, and people would give me packs of canvases they had from their own brief painting phases. But I didn’t really like painting on canvas, something to do with its sanctity in art history I think, felt constricting I guess I don’t know. I liked painting on paper cause it felt like I wasn’t supposed to. But I had no problem building hanging dioramas on canvas. For one thing they were flat, and they were really easy to hang up. But overtime I also discovered this quality they had that was really ideal for creating a cracked masonry effect, because I could press on the canvas from behind to literally crack the material on the front, rather than trying to artificially create the cracks by carving the material.

I’ve used a lot of different tools for my art over the years but these are absolutely my top 10 favorites. Don’t feel discouraged if you don’t have all these things, you can absolutely make it work with just a handful.

Animation experiment with water based dyes. Simple drawings were made with crayola markers, which were then sprayed with water to dilute and morph the dye. An animation was created, duplicated, and overlayed on top of each other with small time offsets and various blending modes.

This is the process of making one of my hanging dioramas, resembling the side of a green house. The base is made of mdf, with an added layer of foamcore posterboard to increase the depth of the windows. The siding is made of balsa wood, textured with a wire brush to create the effect of wood grain. A black wash applied to the wood after it was attached to the base, followed some PVA glue so I could utilize its solubility in water. A layer of green was airbrushed on, and once dry it was scrubbed with water to dissolve the spots where the glue was, creating a chipped paint effect. The central air compressor was made from a piece from a broken security camera, polystyrene plastic card, needle point canvas, and various plastic greeblies. This piece along with 3 of my other hanging dioramas are currently on display at Old Town Hall in Babylon, New York as part of the show “Made By Hand” presented by @babylonartsny which showcases work from a number of local New York miniaturists and sculptors.

This build from late last year will, I think, always kind of stand out to me. It’s very simple, certainly by the standards of many of more recent projects, but it’s even simple when compared to some of my earliest miniatures. It was a nice way to check in on the development of my skills, because to be perfectly honestly, this build was shockingly easy. I new it wouldn’t take me that long, but it literally only took me like 2 days. It was kind of an eye opening moment for me, realizing how far I’ve come with this craft. It was kinda like when you’re trying to lose weight and you first realize that you’re really making progress and seeing results. Or the first time you have a conversation in a language you’re trying to learn. Like, oh wow, I actually did it, I met a goal, I developed a skill. That was part of why I decided to include this piece as a submission to “Made By Hand”, a local art show on miniatures presented by @babylonartsny (that and it went with the color palette of the other pieces)

A lot of the methods I use for making miniatures have really grown and evolved over the years. Not this one though. This is pretty much the exact way I’ve always done it, it just works so well and is so easy, there hasn’t been any real need to change anything. I actually haven’t even employed this method in at least like 3 years, just haven’t done a build that required it. But when working on this miniature house facade with a big central air conditioner unit, I knew just how I would make the hose. I know it may not be completely totally one hundred percent accurate to real life, but for this scene in particular I was actually trying to lean into something vaguely sci-fi or otherworldly. I kind of liked the ac unit and its components having a sense of otherworldliness that gave the piece a vaguely uncanny feeling. It’s always so satisfying using the drill to wrap the floral craft wire around the armature wire. And of course if you want to try this, you can experiment with different gauges of wire for either the inside piece or the outside piece.
