Some math: this time of year we transplant all of our high tunnel beds. The beds in the first photo needed 16 paperpot trays each. A paperpot tray has 264 cells. Each cell has 3-5 seeds. That means about 17,000 little plants per bed. We have 6 beds in 6 tunnels, some with less densely planted crops, so let's say an average of 8,000 plants per bed. If we round to a nice even number that means there are around 280,000 plants that go into our Spring CSA shares. Good thing too, because CSA starts next week and we have 120 families ready and waiting for the first greens of the season.

(Because I can't stop that means about 2,000 plants per family minus wholesale harvests, so if our sales are roughly 50/50 let's just go ahead and assume each family will go home with 1,000 plants worth of veggies over the next 9 weeks. Yum.)

Every year I marvel that green can exist despite the ice, snow, and deep cold of a Vermont Spring. We had to wait through the negative temps over the weekend, but by the end of today a good chunk of our six unheated high tunnels will be filled with veg babies.

The soil is thawing, but still too cold to reliably germinate seeds, so we transplant everything in our first few successions. It took a few years to build up a big enough supply of paperpot equipment, but these days we're transplanting hundreds of trays in March and April to help jumpstart our spring season.

The first fresh arugula and zesty mix will join overwintered kale and spinach in our first CSA shares of the season. We start in just three short weeks! 😳 Sign ups are live on our website...I think! I better make sure everything is up to date over there. 😂

Oh, also plants are growing. CSA starts first week of April. We can't wait to nourish you the best way we know how.

Me: you guys want to go out to the greenhouse to see the baby plants?
Them: Can we pull this plant out? How about this one? Mom can I dump this tray out? Mom can I switch the sticks (plant labels) around? Mom can I squish this one? Mom! Mom!
Me: 🤦🏼‍♀️

Me after weeks of snow (or was it days?). The greenhouse is fired up, the plants are growing, the farmers are shaking off the winter stupor (just me?), and a new season is right around the corner. Here's to brighter, greener, more love-filled days ahead.

I see you, predicted -40° wind-chill and 18" of snowfall. This California girl has come a long way in feeling so chill about intense weather forecasts. I will be spending the day bringing in firewood, testing the generator, and making sure kids get plenty of greenhouse runaround time today. Tonight we'll let the faucets drip into buckets (to keep pipes from freezing and have water for toilet flushing in case we lose power), we'll blast the wood stove (because our heat pumps can't keep up with such cold temps), and we'll make plans to make no plans.

(Wish us luck though because also Jake and I are home sick with two (almost) healthy kids who have had little childcare for the past week due to said illness and school vacations. Things are about to get kooky, and it's highly possible I'll take a nap rather than any of the above cold weather prep. 😂)

I don't do new years resolutions, but today we skipped uncovering our tunnel veg at the opportune time in favor of hosting our first of (hopefully) many pond skates complete with fire pit, bulb crates for the new skaters, and a list of ideas for next time. I also baked a cake with my 5yo rather than checking emails (sorry if you emailed), then Jake and I cried our eyes out watching Air Bud with the kids (after 5 years of only watching Cars we were psyched and also not prepared) rather than optimizing bedtime so we could squeeze some planning in post-bedtime. Farm/life balance is an unending pursuit, but today we nailed it.

(Though it's 8:30pm and our 2yo is currently singing at top volume from his bedroom, so who knows what tomorrow might bring.)

Today marks two years since having my second baby (HBD Hank!), and two days since a surgery I've been waiting on since nearly the day he was born.

Pregnancy was not easy on my body, and I was told that any rehab would undo itself with subsequent pregnancies. After getting Hank through infancy, I promised myself that 2025 would be the year of health. The year to see the specialists, to get the tests, to do the surgeries. And I've done that. I'm so proud that I've done that. This year was long, and hard, and frustrating, but shed some light on why I've felt off for so long.

I haven't been on social media much this year, but I think about you all. I wish I'd had the energy to share more of our life on this farm, but I'm also glad I gave myself the permission to let it go for a bit. I'm not sure what 2026 will bring, but something about this surgery, and Hank turning into a big kid, has let me feel like one chapter is closing and another just might be beginning. If I don't see you here before the new year, thanks for sticking around. Happy Holidays, hug your loved ones, and I'll talk to you soon. 🧡

We wrap up our CSA season the week before Christmas because A, it's a natural shift in schedules for families who live by the school calendar, and B because it gets cooooooold and without heat it's tough for us to promise (unfrozen) greens to our CSA families. This December was the closest one we can remember, so it was a bit dicey here and there, but we made it. Tomorrow is our final CSA distribution of the year and it's truly been one of the best years yet. We're so touched by the kind words, we will miss you too, but current CSA members, keep an eye on your inboxes for one-off CSA box distributions as weather permits this winter, and for sign ups for our 2026 CSA.
