Today we remember Malcolm X on what would have been his 101st birthday.
In November 1964, Malcolm X traveled to Paris during a pivotal period of his international political and spiritual transformation. While in the city, he visited Présence Africaine, the influential Left Bank bookstore and publishing house founded by Senegalese intellectual Alioune Diop. The space served as a major gathering point for Black writers, artists, students, and political thinkers from across Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States.
By this period, Malcolm X had expanded his vision of Black liberation beyond the borders of the United States, connecting the African American freedom struggle to global movements against colonialism, racism, and political oppression. His time in Paris reflects the broader history explored in Paris in Black: Internationalism and the Black Renaissance — a history shaped by transatlantic exchange, Black intellectual life, and international cultural dialogue.
Malcolm X’s presence in Paris remains part of a larger story of Black artists, activists, and thinkers who transformed the city into a vital center of diasporic imagination and political thought.

The first Monday in May marks the Met Gala—this year themed “Costume Art” with the dress code “Fashion is Art.” 🖼️
The DuSable Museum begins a series exploring Black art and fashion as embodied practice.
Lorraine O’Grady’s Art Is… (1983) framed Black life as art, while Mississippi-born designer Patrick Kelly, whose career flourished in Paris—extended that language through fashion. @traceeellisross later carried the frame onto the Met carpet as adornment and assertion.
This lineage continues in @lupitanyongo 2019 Met Gala look, where gold “power to the people” hair picks formed a sculptural crown, echoing Lauren Kelley’s Picken (1999).
Black art moves beyond the canvas, into the body, into fashion, and into view. 🤎

As Michael Jackson’s story returns to the big screen in the upcoming biopic Michael, it’s a fitting time to revisit where it all began. 🎬
Did you know that before becoming global icons, The Jackson 5 recorded their very first single, “Big Boy,” right here on Chicago’s South Side in 1967?
At One-derful! Records in Englewood, a young Michael Jackson and his brothers laid the foundation for what would become one of the most legendary careers in music history.
As the world reflects on his legacy, we’re reminded that even the biggest global moments often have roots right here at home. ✨

Happy Birthday, @chancetherapper 🎉
From investing in Chicago’s youth through his nonprofit, @socialworks_chi, to personally donating $1 million to Chicago Public Schools, and much more, Chance has always poured back into the city that raised him.
We’re grateful for the moments he’s shared with our community, including hosting our Juneteenth celebration here at the DuSable back in 2022.
Here’s to another year of impact, creativity and continued love for the culture. 💫
