This collage is a great showcase of just a few of the many drinks featured in my book, “The Art & Craft of Coffee Cocktails”.
So much eye candy 😍
It doesn't show all the coffee knowledge and techniques I packed in there. Nor the big list of coffee ingredient recipes featured covering liqueurs, syrups, foam, soda, ganache & much more. For those you'll need to get your hands on a copy.
Available in all good book stores and online with Amazon & link in bio for NZ.

Ep 2/2.
42BELOW flavours. Passionfruit, Feijoa, Manuka Honey & Kiwifruit were designed to mix, with creativity. They helped popularise Caipiroskas & the Falling Water (42 Feijoa & Chi) was probably one of the most ordered drinks in NZ at 1 point.

The brand went even further by launching the most iconic bartender competition the industry has ever seen: the 42BELOW Cocktail World Cup.
This wasn’t your typical comp. It was wild, theatrical, & unapologetically Kiwi. Bartenders & industry icons (you know who are) were flownfrom all over the world to QT, NZ, welcomed off planes with pōwhiri & thrown into adrenaline‑fuelled challenges mixing cocktails under pressure while bungee jumping, jet boating & on mountain‑tops.
The CWC became a rite of passage for bartenders & helped launch many into legendary careers all over the globe. The CWC was a place where talent, chaos, and camaraderie collided. It helped cement 42BELOW’s reputation as a brand that genuinely cared about the craft of bartending.
Over the years, 42BELOW evolved from a scrappy Wellington start‑up into a globally recognised vodka brand. By the mid-2000s, 42BELOW had become NZs most successful spirits export, securing its place on the global podium of premium vodka.
In 2003 the company expanded & floated on the NZ stock exchange. In 2006, the brand was acquired by spirits giant Bacardi for $138 million. An unprecedented sum for a New Zealand business at that time.

The premium vodka market began to decline globally from around 2012 and hasn't been the same since. The flavours have been discontinued & their reach, reputation & influence is far from where it once was.
42BELOW will always retain its crown as the pioneer of the country’s modern distilling culture, having paved the way for the wave of craft spirits that followed, proving that New Zealand could compete & win on the world stage.
Will 42BELOW ever revive its glory days, or will it continue to fade into history?

A huge shout out to all those involved in making 42BELOW Vodka a national icon that put NZ hospitality on the world stage.

Ep:1/2. Toasting NZs Best Drinks.

Kicking this series off with a love letter to 42BELOW: The vodka that put New Zealand on the world spirits map & started it all for the current NZ spirit boom.

In 1998 42BELOW founder Geoff Ross was experimenting with vodka distillation in a Wellington garage & went on to sell his first commercial bottles in 1999.
The timing was impeccable as the premium vodka category was building steam with the launches of Belvedere in 1993 & Grey Goose in 1997 (UK launch 2001) all capitalising on the growth of a category led by Absolut.

42BELOW didn't just launch another vodka, it launched a cheeky, proudly Kiwi challenger that refused to play by the traditional playbook. Taking on the heritage labels, 42BELOW stepped up with something radically different: purity, personality & a sense of humour.Rewriting the rules from the bottom of the world.
The name comes from the latitude line passing through the centre of NZ, the 42nd parallel south. A nod to the country’s pristine environment, distance from industrial pollution, & a belief that purity begins with place. The team leaned into this with fearless creativity. Positioning NZ as a source of some of the cleanest water & purest spirit on earth. Distilled multiple times, charcoal‑filtered, & crafted with a focus on clarity & smoothness. But what truly set 42BELOW apart was its voice and a cheeky attitude towards bending the rules.
They embraced guerrilla marketing with a tone that felt more like a mischievous friend than a corporate brand. This approach resonated with bartenders around the world.
At this time, cocktail craft & bartending culture was rapidly rising with the internet helping bartenders research and connect to create communities with a focus on creative, quality cocktails using fresh, premium ingredients. 42BELOW immersed themselves in this by employing well respected bartenders including (self dubbed) Vodka Professors Jacob Briars & Justin Mackenzie to travel NZ & beyond to inspire bartenders.
They launched a range of unique and exotic flavours...

I'm excited to announce a new series I'm releasing here on the gram designed to celebrate some of the many incredible beverage producers we have in this country.
These will be short articles (occasionally videos) sharing interesting facts about brand, location, people involved and most importantly, tasting notes to educate and encourage people to support the brands.
These sessions will cover a wide array of spirits, beers, wines, and soft drinks from all over the country that I have experienced and enjoyed.

Stay tuned for more...
