Francesca Bifulco speaks on history, endurance, and the overlooked narratives that continue to shape America.

“This isn’t a country with a short history… this country was started by the Native Americans.”

Originally from Pæstum in southern Italy, Bifulco draws from religious iconography, ritual, and memory to create contemporary altarpieces that bridge the sacred and the political. In this work, the traditional devotional structure becomes a tribute to Indigenous and Native American communities, honoring both their enduring presence and the ongoing advocacy movements fighting for land, visibility, and justice.

Blending reverence with contemporary storytelling, Bifulco’s layered compositions reimagine historical forms as spaces for collective memory, resilience, and cultural reckoning.

John Geary reflects on embracing imperfection, looseness, and the human hand in his evolving practice.

“I realized that most of the work that I respond to and that I love… is very loose… very human and imperfect and shows the hand. I was always hiding the hand.”

Originally trained through highly realistic drawing, Geary describes his shift away from technical precision toward a more open and exploratory approach to painting and sculpture. Beginning with digitally manipulated found imagery, his “Negative Sheep” series embraces glitches, inversions, and distortions, transforming errors into haunting pastel and painted works that hover between recognition and abstraction. The recurring sheep motif, traditionally tied to conformity, becomes a site of mutation, otherness, and uneasy beauty.

Donnie Molls reflects on returning to experimentation, process, and the feeling of making art for the first time again.

“These are all studies for bigger work… I wanted to go back to the beginning, to where it felt new and fun again. So I’m just trying new processes.”

In Sketches: Life in Landscape, Molls revisits early instincts and ways of working through a series of mixed-media studies developed from photographic imagery. Using silver gelatin prints, darkroom processes, acrylic layering, and transfer techniques, the works embrace unpredictability, texture, and organic transformation. Each piece becomes both an experiment and the starting point for larger future works.

CMAY Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Alex Parrasch.

Featuring a new body of paintings and drawings, Parrasch’s work explores the fragility, resilience, and physical intensity of the human body through dynamic abstractions rooted in anatomy and movement. Sweeping lines, fractured planes, and layered forms stretch, compress, and collide across the picture plane, creating compositions that balance tension, motion, and psychological depth.

Oscillating between representation and abstraction, these works transform bodily structures into energetic visual systems, reflecting on vulnerability, balance, memory, and transformation with visceral immediacy.

CMAY Gallery is pleased to present Figuratively Speaking, the first solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based artist Jody Zellen.

Featuring works from her ongoing series All Too Human, the exhibition brings together looping animations, lenticular images, animated HolaCubes, and an interactive sculpture that explores movement, transformation, and emotional experience through simplified animated figures. Constructed from basic geometric forms, Zellen’s silhouetted characters navigate fragmented environments splitting apart, multiplying, dissolving, and regenerating in endless cycles.

Blending digital experimentation with hand-made processes, Figuratively Speaking reflects on the rhythms, anxieties, humor, and resilience of contemporary life through poetic and metaphorical forms.

Senon Williams explains his unique framing process and the meaning behind using reclaimed materials in his work.

“When I see an old craftsman or California bungalow being demolished, I’ll stop and pick up pieces of old redwood… I feel like wood kind of holds memories of its time.”

Using salvaged wood gathered from across Los Angeles, Williams hand-builds frames from materials sourced from demolished homes and aging architecture throughout the city. The century-old redwood, marked by time, texture, and wear, becomes an extension of the work itself, carrying traces of place, memory, and lived experience.

Sara Ajami reflects on memory, perception, and the emotional residue carried within everyday objects.

“I’m really interested in how we imprint on certain objects and how those objects imprint back on us… when you render them differently than what they look like, new emotions come through.”

Working from stills captured from video, Ajami selects fleeting frames and transforms them through painting into saturated, atmospheric compositions that shift the familiar into something psychologically charged. Influenced by film noir and Lynchian aesthetics, mundane objects become vessels for nostalgia, absence, intimacy, and suspended emotion.
