Two weeks ago, we gathered at The Nest in Oxford to hold space for conversations that are too often separated: climate collapse, ecocide, settler colonialism, war, displacement, and liberation.

Together, with our amazing panel Harpreet Kaur-Spannos, Damien Gayle, Taghrid Choucair-Vizoso, and Mateo Adarve Zuluaga, facilitated by Suzanne Dhaliwal, we reflected on the reality that environmental destruction does not happen in isolation from war and militarisation.

As Oxfam has shown through its climate justice work, where conflict drives ecological breakdown through emissions, land contamination, and the destruction of ecosystems, while the climate crisis in turn deepens inequality and can fuel further instability over land, water, and food.

From extractive industries to militarised borders, from land theft to forced displacement, the climate crisis is deeply entangled with systems of occupation, violence, and racial capitalism. Communities living through war and colonialism are also living through ecological devastation.

Through collective dialogue, zine-making, storytelling, music, and shared reflection, we explored the role of cultural heritage within movements for climate justice and how memory, language, art, food, and storytelling become forms of resistance against erasure. In the face of occupation, war, and environmental destruction, cultural practices carry histories and ways of living that systems of power attempt to displace or destroy.

Climate justice is not only about protecting land, but also about protecting the relationships, identities, and collective memories rooted within it. Holding these conversations at The Nest felt especially important. It created space for honesty, creativity, political reflection, and collective care at a time when spaces like this feel deeply needed.

The evening closed with a moving performance by Kareem Samara, dedicated to the memory of Aisha Younis, grounding us in grief, remembrance, and collective presence.

Present Land is a community art project based in Westminster that explores climate justice through creative collaboration. Over four participatory workshops hosted at the Grand Junction, local residents worked with our selected artist, Maymana Arefin, to reflect on environmental issues and share strategies for sustainable action.

Prioritising youth (16-25) and older adults (65+), the project proposed intergenerational dialogue while addressing social isolation and climate inequality. Community members helped shape the programme and presented their work during the final gathering.

Resources developed will be shared online at a later date, expanding public access and long-term impact.

Starting the year with the Shifting Cultures Festival 🎨

Last Thursday, we had the chance to spend the day at the Shifting Cultures Festival, hosted by @comicrelief and Shifting the Power and the Power of Pop Fund. It was such a welcome reminder of how energising it is to gather in person with people working at the intersection of culture, storytelling, and social change.

Beyond the panels and workshops, what really stayed with us was the atmosphere, comedy, live music, so much good food, and the kind of conversations that spill out into hallways and linger long after the programme ends.

It was especially lovely to connect with folks from Climate Reframe and partner organisations, and to share ideas with artists, strategists, and organisers thinking deeply about how culture can shift narratives and create real impact in the year ahead.

I left feeling inspired and grateful for the gentle easing back into the year and very well fed. More spaces like this, please!
