At this year's Ivors Awards, Sir Elton John made history as the first-ever President of The Ivors Academy and was presented with an Academy Honour. 👏

Today marks a century since the American trumpeter and composer was born. His four-decade career helped to bring jazz music to the mainstream and he is regarded as one of the most influential figures in music history. Before Ozzy Osbourne, he was often nicknamed The Prince of Darkness’ for his intense performances and sharp attitude. Davis helped pioneer multiple sub-genres of jazz, such as bebop, electric jazz-fusion and hard bop. His seminal album ‘Kind of Blue’ remains the best-selling jazz album of all time.

American jazz tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins has died aged 95.

Rollins is widely seen as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of his era, recording more than sixty albums in his seven-decade career and earning the nickname ‘saxophone colossus’. Rest in peace, Sonny Rollins. ❤️

Aaron Copland borrows two square dance melodies, leaning into American folk traditions for this toe-tapping cowboy romance. It’s performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conductor Michael Seal at Classic FM Live with Viking at the Royal Albert Hall.

Ivan the Terrible is remembered as one of Russia’s most brutal rulers. The 16th century Russian Tsar reportedly tortured animals as a child, executed enemies on whims, and even killed his own son in a rage. But he also had a deeply religious education and was a highly trained musician.

He wrote two Orthodox hymns, including works honouring the Virgin Mary and Saint Peter of Moscow. The surviving compositions, written in the style of traditional Russian chant, were signed: “The work of Tsar Ivan, Despot of Russia.” He also sang regularly in church services and took an active interest in sacred music throughout his reign.
