We are unimaginably heartbroken by the unexpected passing of our beloved friend, Jason "Shades" Schusterbauer who died in a car accident on September 22nd. To say that he was an employee of BookPeople, a legendary bookseller, and our one-man master of bargain, is true but not even close to describing his place in our store. For many of us, he was the first face we saw when walking through the doors in the morning, and if you have ever shopped with us on weekday mornings, you’ve been lucky enough to receive his friendly greeting from the information desk, or “grinfo” as we call it, after Shades’ insistence that “these kids just don’t know how to greet people anymore.”
Our community knows him not only through the incredible work he’s done building the most stellar bargain section of all time, but also as a frequent participant in our goofiest (and informational!) socials. For just the smallest glimpse into the abundant joy that Shades brought to us on a daily basis, see our pinned posts.
Shades had impeccable taste, for both himself and our customers, and passionately loved to share books with people. He radiated kindness and integrity. He made silly overhead pages over the loudspeakers, sold us girl scout cookies, enjoyed live music and traveling, and made us laugh so very much. He is forever in our hearts and we are going to deeply miss him. ❤️

"An astonishing & beautiful debut..."
Mallory highly recommends our upcoming event with Alexa Yasemin Brahme to celebrate her debut book GOOD NEWS, a stylish and provocative novel in which a young painter attempts to make a life in New York City as an artist, a good immigrant daughter, and soon (maybe) a wife—until her smooth-talking art-critic ex resurfaces, and an inevitable mess ensues...
Alexa will be in conversation with COUTNRY OF ORIGIN author and @texasbookfest COO Dalia Azim at BookPeople on Saturday, May 30th. RSVP for this FREE EVENT at the 🔗link in our bio!
