Once one of the world’s largest fishing ports, the town of Grimsby in northern England is today often written off as a place defined by deprivation and decline. But for many young people, it’s a place they love and are proud to call home.

The town has a higher number of working-age adults out of employment than the national average, and 41% of under-16s in the town live in relative low-income families.

Recently, as part of a year-long project called Against the tide, The Guardian’s Seascape series followed 19-year-old Cohen, who is desperate to find a permanent job while running a mascot hire company and chasing his dream of becoming a professional wrestler.

‘This has been one of the most disgraceful episodes in British politics in a while,’ says assistant Opinion editor, Jason Okundaye, describing the murder of Henry Nowak and the debate that ensued about ‘two-tier policing’ in the UK.

Last December, Henry Nowak was walking home alone after a night out with university friends in Southampton, when he was stabbed repeatedly by Vickram Digwa. Digwa then lied to the police when they arrived on the scene, claiming Nowak had racially abused him. The police pulled Nowak across the gravel and forced his hands behind his back. As he pleaded with officers, telling him that he had been stabbed, one officer dismissed him, saying: “I don’t think you have, mate.” Nowak lost consciousness and died.

It’s a case that has shocked millions, and Nowak’s family are right to describe their son’s treatment by the police as ‘inhumane and degrading’, says Okundaye, who writes that this case is part of a long history of deaths after police contact.

However, what is also horrifying, Okundaye says, is that Nowak’s case has been used by hard-right political figures to refuel a pervasive lie: that ethnic minorities receive preferential treatment from the police – so-called ‘two-tier policing’.

‘When you look at the stats on policing in this country and the real disparities of treatment which exist between people of colour, particularly Black people and white people, the rhetoric of these hard-right politicians looks even more shameful, even more dangerous, and even more inflammatory,’ argues Okundaye.

‘Henry Novak tragically died not being believed by the people who were meant to protect him. So the least we can do for his legacy is to ensure that his name is not used to promote further fiction.’

Anthony Head, the actor best-known for playing Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died aged 72.

“He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family,” his daughters Emily and Daisy Head said in a statement.

“We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues and fans of the shows he was in – he loved his job very much and he always considered himself incredibly lucky to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades,” said his daughters.

As well as playing the mentor to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Head had a recurring role in David Walliams and Matt Lucas’s BBC sketch show Little Britain, appeared in the BBC production of Merlin as well as film roles in The Iron Lady and The Inbetweeners Movie. Striking teachers have wreaked havoc in Mexico City a few days before the city hosts the first match of the World Cup.

Protesters pulled down giant mannequins of football players, ripping off their clothes and setting them on fire on the city’s main Paseo de la Reforma.

They also set footballs alight and blocked main roads across the capital. The teachers, associated with the CNTE union, are calling for salary increases and the reversal of pension laws.

They have threatened to protest during the World Cup unless a solution is reached.

“It’s a government directly selling to Kushner and it really blurs the line between the role of a real estate developer and a geopolitical actor.”

Thousands have protested in the Albanian capital this week against a planned luxury resort backed by Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Groundwork has begun on the $1.6bn complex in an area long seen as one of the Mediterranean’s most environmentally sensitive. After builders began erecting a concrete-based, barbed wire-topped fence around the site, alarm turned to public outrage at the environmental damage and lack of political transparency around the deal.

“Pride: One. Reform: Nil.” said one attendee at Durham Pride.

The Pride event that took place last weekend in the northern English city almost didn’t happen.

When Reform UK won control of Durham county council last year, one of their first moves in power was to take down the rainbow flag that flew over its headquarters. Soon after, it announced the council would axe funding for the city’s Pride event.

But in a testament to the enduring relationship forged during the miners’ strikes of the 1980s – immortalised in the 2014 film Pride – this year’s event was bigger and better than ever, thanks to funding from trade unions and the local community.

“This year has really shown us that there’s so much support and love for LGBT+ people,” said Mel Metcalf, who founded Durham Pride in 2014.

Watch to hear what participants had to say about this year’s parade and read more about the day from our North of England correspondent Hannah Al-Othman via the link in bio.

The disgraced former prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was evicted from the mansion in Windsor where he lived, faces fresh scrutiny following a report into royal property arrangements. The report revealed he was subletting three cottages on the Windsor property while paying a “peppercorn” rent there himself.

A peppercorn rent is a legal term used in leases to show that rent technically exists, so the lease is valid, but the figure is often low, such as £1 a year.

The report, published on Friday, will form the basis of the Commons public accounts committee’s inquiry into royal properties prompted by the public outcry when it emerged in October that Mountbatten-Windsor was paying the peppercorn rent on Royal Lodge.

The review also revealed that King Charles pays an “adjusted” (below open market value) rent from his private Duchy of Lancaster income for Mountbatten-Windsor’s daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, to live in royal palaces even though they are "non-working royals" in that they don't work for the monarchy.

A spokesperson for the crown estate said: “The crown estate welcomes the National Audit Office’s review, which confirms its leases with members of the royal family were agreed in line with independent, professional advice and open market valuations. We look forward to discussing the report further with the public accounts committee in due course.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “We are grateful to the National Audit Office for this report, which is in line with the royal household’s commitment to transparency. We hope that the findings will help correct, clarify or contextualise a number of points regarding royal properties. As the report notes, arrangements for properties managed by the royal household vary based on a number of factors to ensure residences are filled appropriately, depending on their location, tenants and purpose.”

“There’s so many displaced people… who don’t have access to medical care.”

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire to end hostilities as the US attempts to overcome one of the largest barriers to reaching a broader deal to end the war with Iran.

But the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire is dependent on a complete halt of fire from Hezbollah, and the evacuation of all its fighters in southern Lebanon.
