MILES AHEAD hosted an early listen to ”Honora”: the emotional, sensational jazz trumpet debut from musician, activist and passionate runner Flea (most widely known as the legendary bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. (!)).
By “early” we mean meeting for a 5k neighborhood jog at 830a on the album’s release day—directly followed by a hifi deep dive into Flea’s collaboration with some of the most intriguing and inimitable players on the LA free jazz scene and beyond @jeffparkersounds @buttersscup @deantoniparks @joshuaajohn (at the controls!)
Movement and high fidelity—running IN high fidelity—wouldn’t come as a surprise to Flea and his cohort. It’s there for us to explore perhaps now more than ever, as constant demand on/for our bodies, our minds and our very selves distracts us with the steady wave of noise subsuming us.
A while back a friend pointed out the irony that while running in essence might be perceived to be about moving fast as possible, there’s so much to discover about our practice when we pause to go deeper to reflect, refract and rest. That rest is resistance—and a readying for miles ahead.
Thanks to @flea333 @nonesuchrecords @intlanthem @ld_university for making the morning a very different—and very special—rush hour.

Wild grateful for all the folks who supported for the interminable years it took to get MILES AHEAD out of my head and into the world. I’ve spent past three weeks in a dreamlike state, connecting with folks over late nite listenings and quiet convos, hosting community activations and HQ duties @crenshawmile and of course, the chance to host an early morning jog and and first listen to “Honora”—the debut LP from generational musician, activist and passionate runner Flea (an album featuring an metaverse of LA jazz including @jeffparkersounds @buttersscup @joshuaajohn @deantoniparks ).
Closing out the residency this weekend at Life Development University with a full slate of programming:
—Tonite 9 April / listening session / 6-8p
—Friday 10 April / open decks with special guest Rocio Contrreas (KCRW)
—Saturday 11 April /10 year anniversary screening of “Bekoji” an experimental short film about the lives of girls and young women runners in rural Ethiopia by Joel Wolpert with Knox Robinson / 11am / 2pm / 4pm...
Rare Ethiojams on vinyl + free jazz + pourovers all day by yours truly!
Plus a drop of risograph mini posters, vintage LA run culture garms via @running.supply and yezzz MILES AHEAD cotton tees. Follow along in stories @milesaheadlosangeles! and see you this weekend at 4241 Crenshaw Blvd.

I’m a massive fan of public transit—not just for the fate of our planet but for what it offers to our cities and our communities.
Ahead of last weekend’s Crenshaw Mile I asked Raji @raji.runs and her teammates @runlikeagirl._ to Go Metro as they headed out to our final community track session at Crenshaw HS with TCM grand marshall, Olympic medalist and Crenshaw alum Johnny Gray @johnnygrayii before the weekend’s big race.
LA did the same on Saturday—folks hopping on the K Line to Hyde Park Station—the start line at Nipsey Hussle Square!—to walk, jog, run and race 5,280 feet and head home from the finish at the beautiful Leimert Park Station.
All love in all ways always to see yall out on the Boulevard! Let’s do it again!

FAST, FUN AND FREE: The Crenshaw Mile team is back at it again tonight with your weekly neighborhood track session at Crenshaw High School as we get ready for the race in just a few week’s time on April 4th.
Seems word got out that last week’s session landed a bit different as we explored what it takes to cover the 5,2980 feet from Nipsey Hussle Square to Leimert Park Plaza. This evening we’re gonna continue that convo as together we unlock the ways in which it’s possible for us to run faster and stronger for longer—without trying so hard to, well, run harder. We’re training for speed 100%! But we’re doing it our own way because we know running fast can have us having fun AND feeling free.
So let’s meet at 7p at Crenshaw High—registration link in bio @crenshawmile.

FLASH: With less than a month to go til race day on April 4th, the Crenshaw Mile crew is back on the track tonight as we host community for the first of our weekly Monday night track sessions at Crenshaw High School powered by @NikeRunning + @NikeLA.
We *know* you’ve already signed via link in bio @crenshawmile but we’re so inspired by the homie Nathan Martin’s @nim_i_am epic sprint finish kick at Mile 26 to win yesterday’s LA Marathon that we’re sparking a flash sale for your friends who haven’t registered yet:
$26 for Crenshaw Mile 2026 for the next 26 hours starting NOW and ending tomorrow, March 11th at 11:59pm
Tonight’s coach notes are inspired by Nathan’s dramatic move at Mile 26 came at the end of a big “negative split”—that’s when an athlete runs the second half of their race faster than the first. (Nathan ran the hot and hilly second half of the LA Marathon course over a minute faster than the first 13.1 miles!).
Tonight trackside we’ll explore some ways to plan and prepare for negative splits with positive vibes as you line up for your fastest—or first—5,280 feet at the 2026 Crenshaw Mile.
See yall on the Boulevard!
