San Xavier del Bac
Paradoxically, the forces aligning to preserve and protect great cultural legacy are sometimes poverty or indifference. The wonderful Greek Revival houses of the 1820’s looked to many style-conscious owners of the 1840’s dated and needing Italianate updating. Cities like Charleston South Carolina, or neighborhoods like Soho inadvertently preserved their character partly due to declining economic circumstances.
San Xavier del Bac was founded in 1692 and completed in 1797. It is a Spanish Baroque design with Moorish elements.It continues in its original function as a parish church and school serving the Tohono O’odham community. It has suffered earthquakes and periods of neglect, but is remarkably intact inside and out. ____________________________________
