Legendary Japanese music maker and ARPA Records label boss DJ Sodeyama visits the Zenaari Podcast with a whimsical hour long number. For about three decades, the Tokyo selector has been a mainstay of his local scene, pushing his laid back electronics and thumping techno ever further, and mastering each genre with equal passion and faculty. His debut album Metal Heart broke with his previous house in favour of a more percussive vision and put his name firmly on the map at home and abroad, before catching the eye of Marco Carola’s ZENIT for extra track releases there. And under his alias The People in Fog, his focus returns to house with a dubby twist, offering an expert take and tribute to Chicago’s glory days. Established as producer and jockey, Sodeyama’s free to explore the fringes of his music a little more these days: enter Zenaari Mix 022. Slow, breezy and melody-driven, this one’s a downtempo entry that winds between iconoclastic vocals and acoustic interludes, with a healthy dose of twitchy atmospherics that bring a little kick. From fuzzy instrumentals to rambling drums, Sodeyama strays from his usual beats and plays on textures and moods with the keen instinct of a longtime vet. DJ Sodeyama’s been around since the 90s, a Tokyo-based whizz and DJ’s DJ, whose career has offered the type of sound many selectors would envy. It’s incredibly sharp, meandering along its intelligent thread in unexpected and high-minded ways. Since the early noughties he could add producer to his soubriquet too, flexing his minimal muscle with early releases, a steady stream of ensuing ventures further cementing his craft via Korean-based deep techno distributor Artscope, Dynamic Reflection, illegal alien, Daybreak and many more. He’s also explored adjacent genres and ventured into the world of house under his parallel alias The People In Fog. Pretty full plate, but the quality of his sound has suffered nothing for it. His techno is an expert tapestry of interlaced details and lingering moods, injected with raw feeling and undeniable skill. It darts from peak to peak, fusing frequencies riddled with forward-pitched elements and vivid effects, and forges a long-range feeling that abuts the realm of both man and machine. Thick and volatile techno that serves as proof that the genre can keep expanding outwards in fresh and surprising ways. Bassiani Podcast 260 moves the needle further, its quintessential Sodeyama: vivid climbs and steep descents, warped vocal samples, brave and unbending beats for prime-time raving.
