The majority of floristry waste is actually compostable.

Stems, foliage and flowers are all organic material that can be returned to the soil through commercial composting.
The challenge is that most waste systems were never designed specifically for florists. So large volumes of green waste often get mixed into general commercial waste streams instead. That means material that could become compost is lost to landfill or incineration.

We believe the industry needs systems that make composting:
🌱simple
🌱commercially viable
🌱easy to integrate into busy floristry operations

Because sustainability only works when it works operationally too.

We’ve been a little quieter on social media recently — but that’s because May madness in floristry is very real.

For those in London, mid-May becomes a different beast entirely. Between RHS Chelsea, Chelsea in Bloom, and wedding season fully underway, the industry moves at another pace.

For us, that means incredible amounts of floral waste flowing through every part of the business — not just from Chelsea, but across all of our collections.

And honestly, we keep having moments where we pinch ourselves. Three years ago, COM:POST was just a crazy idea.

This is exactly where we hoped it could lead 🌱

What actually makes compost… compost?

In the UK, high-quality compost isn’t just “organic waste left to break down”.

It’s produced to strict standards.

To be sold and used commercially, compost is typically made to PAS100 — the UK’s recognised quality standard.

That means:
• Controlled input materials
• Managed composting process
• Regular testing
• Certification to ensure it’s safe and consistent

Because not all compost is the same.

And not all waste treatment creates something valuable.

At COM:POST, the floral waste we collect is processed through certified composting sites — turning it into a product that can be returned to UK growers.

Not waste.
A resource.

Because how waste is processed matters.

And what it becomes matters even more.

FAQ’s 🌱

Most florists don’t actually know where their waste goes.

If it’s going in general waste, it’s likely landfill or incineration — and there is a better way.

We get asked the same questions all the time:
→ Where does it go?
→ Is it easy to use?
→ Will it cost more?
→ Is it genuinely sustainable?

So we’ve answered them.

At COM:POST, your floral waste is:
✔ Collected separately
✔ Turned into high-quality compost
✔ Returned to UK growers

A true closed-loop system. No landfill. No incineration. No greenwashing.

And it fits into your workflow, not the other way around.

If your floral waste is still going in the bin… it might be time to rethink it.

What happens to your bags of floral waste after we collect it? 🌱

In just 16–20 weeks, your COM:POST bags and their contents are transformed into high-quality compost.

Collected from florists → taken to our composting partners → carefully processed → and returned to the soil to support UK growers.

And importantly — the compost created meets PAS100 standards.

PAS100 is the UK’s benchmark for compost quality. It ensures that the material is:
• Fully broken down and safe to use
• Free from harmful contaminants
• Nutrient-rich and suitable for agriculture

In short — it’s not just compost, it’s certified, high-quality compost that can go straight back into growing.

This is how floral waste becomes part of something bigger 🌿

April marks Earth Month — a moment to pause and reflect on the role we all play in the systems around us.

In floristry, the conversation around sustainability has grown significantly over the past few years.
Not just in awareness, but in action.

From how flowers are sourced,
to the materials we use,
to how waste is managed at the end of its life.

There is still a long way to go — but there is also real progress being made across the industry.

Later this month, Earth Day (22nd April) will bring that conversation into sharper focus.

Its purpose is simple:
to support environmental protection and encourage collective action at every level — from individuals to entire industries.

For us, it’s a reminder that meaningful change doesn’t come from one moment.

It comes from the systems we choose to build — and be part of.
