As a North Shore Lifeguard, father of two, and winner of The Eddie Aikau Invitational, Luke depends on his gear in heavy surf and demanding ocean conditions year round.

We first connected through Hawaii’s North Shore Lifeguards in 2024, and since then our watches have barely left his wrist, including during The Eddie at Waimea Bay in 2025.

We’ve been through a lot with the recent flooding, and so many of our small businesses felt the impact, but they’re still here and doing their best to bounce back.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more humble human than Luke Shepardson. An acclaimed North Shore lifeguard, past Eddie Aikau Champion, and dedicated father, Luke is as modest as he is fearless. In the latest installment of On Guard, we connect with a fabled waterman to learn more about his path to the lineup, the importance of community, and his continued pursuit of the world’s heaviest waves.
