My parents didn’t really want us to play video games as a kid but my brother got a game boy for Christmas (we had to share) and we played Pokémon yellow together. We couldn’t figure out how to switch our first Pokémon until halfway through the game so we had a level 45 pikachu that wouldn’t listen to us. 😂😬

Eventually we each got our own game, I got blue and he got red. We could still only play 30 minutes a day, even in the summer and we couldn’t trade because we only had 1 game boy.

We spent time with my cousin (who wasn’t allowed to play at all because his mom was super Christian) walking around their neighborhood and pretending to find Pokémon. We drew Pokémon and even made up our own crosses (Rapidash should have a Pegasus version that flies is all I’m saying).

For whatever reason, Pokémon remains my only hobby. It’s the only thing that I’ve kept an obsession with besides art and the only thing I do purely for fun.

I had so much fun creating this piece and I’m so grateful to be in this show with so many amazing artists… and yes the lighting and mushrooms glow in the dark.

The past 2 weeks have been an absolute WHIRLWIND!

From opening my solo show @coreyhelfordgallery on May 15th, flying to Denver to teach a glass painting workshop @dlartglass then heading home to build out a brand new glass-painting studio, my plate has been FULL.

I’m so grateful to have this artist life to live, thank you for being a part of it!

If you missed the opening reception of my solo show I will be doing a CLOSING RECEPTION/GLASS PAINTING DEMO @coreyhelfordgallery on Saturday June 6th from 2pm-3pm! Andrea Guzzetta is originally from Wisconsin. Her rural upbringing (and lack of cable) informs her obsession with the natural world and her carefully researched animal habitats. Guzzetta currently lives in Los Angeles with her giant boyfriend and tiny dog.

“Manta Ray Rising” is a 16” x 16” stained glass piece I created for my solo show @coreyhelfordgallery

There’s actually a pink manta Ray that exists off the coast of Australia named “Inspector Clouseau” and ever since I learned about him, I’ve been wanting to do a pink manta Ray piece.

This imaginary pink manta ray has scooped up a piece of Sumatran rainforest and spirited away an endangered Sumatran Tiger and her cubs to live safely in the sky. It is estimated that only 400-600 Sumatran tigers still live in the wild.

This little ecosystem also contains a great hornbill, a pangolin, a turtle, a lizard, and the very rare corpse flower, which looks beautiful but smells like decaying flesh.

The background glass is all mouth-blown antique glass created by @fremont_antique_glass as is much of the flashed glass (pinks, blues, and greens). The orange glass was sourced from @coloradoglassworksstudio and the rest was all from @pasadenastainedglass

This collection is all about finding a safe place to rest. I wanted to show a version of queer love that was gentle and that has a happy ending as so many queer love stories retain elements of being hidden or kept secret. I wanted to imagine a world where queer people could openly express affection without fear.

If you notice though, buried beneath the surface, I have a brick with “Marsha P.” written on it. This is a reference to Marsha P. Johnson, a queer activist who famously threw the first brick at the stonewall riots. I wanted to honor her sacrifice and pay homage to the fact that any queer safety we find comes from the sacrifice of those who fought for those rights.

“How it Feels When We’re Together” is a 20” x 20” piece I made for my recent solo show @coreyhelfordgallery

This collection is all about finding a safe place to rest. I wanted to show a version of queer love that was gentle and that has a happy ending as so many queer love stories retain elements of being hidden or kept secret. I wanted to imagine a world where queer people could openly express affection without fear.

If you notice though, buried beneath the surface, I have a brick with “Marsha P.” written on it. This is a reference to Marsha P. Johnson, a queer activist who famously threw the first brick at the stonewall riots. All of the work for my solo show is for little Dre, the girl who would have SCREAMED if she saw these pieces, who would have wanted to put the stickers on her notebooks and posters in her room.

I hope your inner child screams too. I’ve gotten so many incredible messages for people saying how much the work took their breath away and made them feel something.
