Ecological consultants, Bowland Ecology Ltd, have confirmed that this is in fact the long-toed water beetle (Pomatinus substriatus). With just 79 records on the NBN Atlas, this species is rare in the UK and is listed as Vulnerable on the Red List. π΄
We just had to share this bit of good news and give a huge shout out to all our SmartRivers groups, who show such passion and care for the work they do. SmartRivers is our citizen science project powering wild fish recovery through robust evidence collection, deeper understanding and community engagement.

Meet Sam, our senior freshwater ecologist. Todayβs mission: carrying out benchmark surveys of freshwater invertebrates at Tarras Valley Nature Reserve. β¨
Surveying freshwater invertebrates is an effective method to understand the pressures that a river is facing, from pollution to over-abstraction. These little guys are brilliant indicators of river health.
Tarras Valley Nature Reserve is at the start of an exciting freshwater conservation project, and todayβs surveys help us understand what invertebrates are currently inhabiting the river. This monitoring creates a biodiversity baseline. Over the course of the project, repeat surveys will monitor how the ecology of the river changes in response to the project. πͺ²
Sam also carried out environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling, exploring how modern techniques like this can complement traditional invertebrate monitoring methods such as kickβsampling.
