What actually defines whether something is “hard” or not? This was a central question I’d been thinking about ahead of my interview today with @conradhumphreys (which was a banger by the way!) What do you think makes for “hard work”?

Happy 🇺🇸 Mother’s Day! Mia gets two, cause it’s a different day here in Sweden! So proud of her for showing Axel what it means to be a badass mom out there pursuing your dreams. ⛵️ 🌊 🏝️ While Mia’s in the middle of the South Pacific for 7 weeks, me and the Dude are holding down the fort at home. We love you Mia! 🥰

Matt Rutherford’s imminent attempt at circumnavigating the Arctic, as shown on my living room map of North “Amerika”! Mia got me this map for my birthday a few years back, and what a wonderful piece of practical art! It was made in 1941 for school classrooms. I realized sitting here listening to music and gazing at it that it perfectly shows Matt’s route! I recorded a podcast with him in Annapolis and got to see his Valiant 42 in refit mode. Podcast coming Tuesday! In the meantime enjoy the map! 🗺️

Sick day out on WOODWIND last weekend! 20-25 💨 from the west, fast reach out to the Bay Bridge and fun short-tacking up the Severn! Super fun sailing with @delaneyvorwick and as usual, awesome photos from @glennevis. Surreal that we own this business and these boats now which have such a huge presence in Annapolis and which played such a big role in 59° North starting in the first place. Pretty fun!

Celestial Workshop happening this weekend in Annapolis! First time teaching this in six years, had to shake some rust off but I’m reminded how much I enjoy teaching in general and especially celestial. I learn something new every time I do this, find fun ways to explain the different concepts. Today we’re going to run through reverse-engineering some ‘synthetic’ sights (ie, what would the sextant have read at a given position on a given date & time). I feel like that was the final lightbulb for me - once I understood how to do that, I felt I fully ‘got’ it. Hoping to make these an annual thing like we used to do!

Shout-out to J/World Annapolis and Weems & Plath for supporting the workshop with classroom space & plotting tools!

Schooner Woodwind is hiring! Apply at schoonerwoodwind.com! I got my sailing career kick-started back in 2006, working as a deckhand onboard the two beautiful 74-ft identical schooners, and I’ve never had a real job since! They need full-time deckhands for the rest of the high season between now & end of November, with perhaps a possibility to stay on for longer. Good pay (+ tips!), great family-run business, awesome boats and LOTS of sailing. And you don’t need a license to be a deckhand, some sailing experience helps but as with most things attitude is everything. Woodwind taught me how to REALLY sail, how to work hard and follow your dreams. Tell them 59° North sent you! We’ll be there in October - see you there!

I’ve been at sea for two months, home in Sweden 🇸🇪 two days and already back at it! Gotta admit I’m digging these cooler climes after sweating 🥵 my way across the Pacific! Heading out into the Sthlm archipelago for an island birthday party on our friend John’s beautiful Opal 46 schooner ARGO II. Feels GREAT not to be in charge for once!

Introducing the ‘PRESS GANG’ patch. Inspired by crew member Jim, who has sailed more miles than any other customer (it’ll be over 20,000 very soon!) and who’s referred more people than anyone else to sail with us, the PRESS GANG is our fun way of encouraging people to help us spread the word of 59° North. You can claim your PRESS GANG patch if you know you’ve referred someone to us already, -OR- if you’d like to volunteer your time at a boat show, host a talk at your local sailing club or otherwise help us get people into the magic of ocean sailing! DM us for details or email holdfast@59-north.com.

Check out the rest of our earned patches, inspired by old-school sailor tattoos, at 59-north.com/tattoo

Thanks to @yellowmatilda for doing the PRESS GANG patch artwork!
