After the kids have settled into their new primary school, we are happy to share the new signage at Schule Thurgauerstrasse 55 in Zürich, commissioned by Amt Für Hochbauten @zuerichbaut .

Taking inspiration from the technical and linear appearance of the new building by Bollhalder Walser Architects, the signage for the schools seeks to contrast the building’s static nature with a sense of childhood wonder and playfulness. The typography references standardised methods of early writing instruction, such as the “Deutschschweizer Basisschrift,” as well as tools like exercise books and grid paper. This signage aims to evoke memories and reflect on the foundational learning processes that shape early education.
To achieve this, we designed a unique font, OP Saturday, for both 2D and 3D applications, collaborating closely with Hot Wire Extensions, known for their sustainable and innovative manufacturing processes. The result is dynamic, playful signage that brings a subtle, tactile warmth and seamlessly integrates with the building’s architecture.

Super happy to finally share the results of our signage design at the primary school in Dübendorf. We created a modular typeface using anodized aluminium modules. The soft gradient in the two-colour scheme brings a sense of freshness to the dark surroundings of the 1960s building.

Thanks to @bwbsurfacetechnology for the great opportunity to realize this exciting project!

Onari Projects (Anina Amacker & Laura Moor) @onari.projects  are one of the finalists in the graphic design category of the Swiss Design Awards 2024. Let us introduce you to their selected project!

Onari Projects is a design studio run by Anina Amacker and Laura Moor. Commissioned to design the signage for an educational centre, Onari Projects took the school’s interior design and its notion of diversity as a starting point for an overarching design concept. Charlotte Rohde’s 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘌𝘥𝘨𝘦 served as the project’s basis because of its dynamic typeface characterised by contrasts of corners and curves, thus fitting perfectly into the context of the building itself.

Using methods ranging between the digital and analogue, such as laser cutting, thermoforming, 3D scanning and printing, the letters are expanded from a two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional body. The third dimension intensifies the characteristics of the letters and gives them an individuality bordering on the limits of legibility. The letters’ silver surface reflects the colours of the building and, as such, gently interacts with the architecture’s space.

Onari Projects’ ambition, costs and the architectural structure of the building itself were decisive for the production method and materials employed.

For Primarschule Stägenbuck, we developed a typeface built from five reduced aluminum modules that combine into letters, numbers, and symbols. While based on a clearly defined modular grid, the system creates a surprisingly diverse visual language through unexpected module arrangements and its visible construction, giving the typeface a strong spatial presence. The typographic system references constructive and serial design principles found in architecture and design of the 1960s and 70s, when modular order systems, industrial grids, and playful building-block concepts shaped the cultural context in which the school building was created.

For the new identity of @buechherrliberg, many original details of the restaurant became important references throughout the design process. We tried to translate familiar and nostalgic elements into something more distinct, while reinterpreting found elements into new meanings.
The carved heart chair in the second image became one of these references within the visual identity. In alpine folk art, the heart often symbolises hospitality and a sense of home.

We created the new visual identity for the historic restaurant @buechherrliberg high above Lake Zurich, recently taken over by @andreas_caminada_schauenstein
In contrast to the rustic character of the interior, with its wood and ornament, we went for a bold and fresh graphic approach.
The colors and shapes feel a little unexpected and slightly edgy, while still finding their place within the floral, iconic interior by @atelier_zuerich.

The building by Bollhalder Walser Architects feels precise, almost static. With the signage, we set out to introduce a counterpoint: something softer, more dynamic, almost alive.
Using the unique Hot Wire Extensions process, heated wire transforms a mixture of sand and recycled nylon into solid forms. Fine lines evolve into volumes, as if the letters are emerging directly from the wire itself.
The material expression adds warmth, texture, and a sense of movement to the facade, creating a contrast to the building’s technical character.

We developed a custom typeface through experiments in both 2D and 3D, resulting in objects shaped as much by process as by the architecture itself. Without the usual separation between design, planning, and production, collaboration became central to the project. The result is a shared exploration of material and process, driven by making rather than predefined outcomes

We developed a custom typeface through experiments in both 2D and 3D, resulting in objects shaped as much by process as by the architecture itself. Without the usual separation between design, planning, and production, collaboration became central to the project. The result is a shared exploration of material and process, driven by making rather than predefined outcomes

The second entrance connects interior and exterior spaces and serves as an additional main entrance: the signage marks this area and stages it as a sculptural welcome.

Last summer we brought the exterior lettering of Primarschule Nordstern on Thurgauerstrasse in Zürich to life.

More than simply identifying the building, the signage defines a moment of arrival. The letters extend from the concrete canopy, guiding the entrance while giving the school a tactile and expressive identity. Depending on the light, their attachment almost disappears and the letters begin to float.
