proof of life ✹ belated birthday post

my birthday intention this year was to bring @scorpionicsun into the world - an online space I’m building to share my personal collection of books and print ephemera, circulating scans and PDFs.

it’s named after my favorite book of poems by Moroccan Amazigh poet Mohammed Khaïr-Eddine, and it also arrives exactly sixty years after the first issue of Souffles was published in Rabat in 1966, a journal made for revolutionary thinkers of the global majority, principally as “a manifesto for a new aesthetics in the Maghreb,” formed by a small group of self-professed linguistic guerrillas, of which he was a part.

this lineage, and the afterlives of this writing, have been a compass to me over the years, and continue to offer an orientation I trust.

the hope is for this to grow into a research library and archive in the future, and to exist as an accompaniment in conversation w my film programming and producing work.

"Imagine a film about police brutality, with no brutality. A film where nothing happens, yet you’re left baffled. Invisible violence, disguised under lawful humiliation. Domination wrapped in polite protocols. I started talking about making this short film back in 2018, but the idea of it was haunting me probably since the late 90s, when I started being constantly stopped by the police for “random identity checks. I felt a certain urgency to tell this very personal story."
