In an era defined by digital surplus, our sense of self is increasingly fragmented and recomposed into data traces through platforms designed to surveil. 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳—𝙞𝙨𝙝, the first major solo exhibition by artist duo XJ (Xin Wen and JJ Agcaoili), explores how the subjective self is constructed, compressed, and now mimicked by the technologies we inhabit.

Notable for their methodology of working in between the physical and the digital, XJ brings together five works across projection-mapped installation, moving image, and kinetic sculpture. Moving between physical interaction and algorithmic abstraction, these works embody how the self is both turned inward and constantly exposed.

Set in a one-cubic-metre flat, it captures the absurd intimacy of life compressed by space and time.

X&J (Xin Wen & JJ Agcaoili) is a Chinese American and Filipino artistic duo based in London. Their work indulges a deep curiosity in emerging technology and spatial psychology, and their implications on contemporary culture and the human body. 2023 marked the beginning of their award-winning practice in experimental film and interactive media, with exhibitions and public appearances in San Francisco, Bilbao, Linz, Singapore, Berlin, Milan, and London.

Proof of Personhood (2024) is a multi-projector art installation by X+J of @manyprojects.co that represents this phenomenon through the shadows of absent people cast across an empty room by a lone spotlight. Curated by @x.u.cheng of @asianartmuseum

🔦 “Proof of Personhood” debuted last October at the @asianartmuseum's Lee Gallery. We used shadows walking around shadowless guests as a way to bring the Dead Internet Theory to life.

💡 It took us several late nights in the gallery to realize the work—while the neighboring Hallyu Exhibit blasted Gangnam Style in a nonstop loop. Thanks @x.u.cheng & @ecntres for helping us make this piece a reality!

The giant struggles for what feels like an eternity, the box buckles ever-so-slightly, and light eventually breaks into the seemingly-sealed space. EMERGE:NCY was also featured on screens in Berlin and Milan and won the 2023 CIRCA Public Vote Prize.
