A deeply intimate and decade-long coming-of-age portrait, ONE IN A MILLION follows Israa from childhood to adulthood as her life unfolds between Syria and Germany. First introduced at age 11 as she prepares to cross the Aegean Sea with her family in search of a better life in Europe, the film traces a formative journey shaped by war, displacement, and the fragile promise of belonging.
As Israa grows up in exile, new freedoms and old traditions collide—reshaping her identity and testing the bonds of family across borders. Moving between countries and years of transformation, the film illuminates the complexities of the refugee experience while asking a universal question: what does it truly mean to call a place home?
Directors Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes bring extraordinary long-term access and trust to this story of one family’s journey through displacement and return. Azzam is an award-winning filmmaker and humanitarian whose work focuses on Syrian refugee women and empowerment through the arts, including the initiative FILM FOR FREEDOM. MacInnes is a London-born filmmaker whose work spans documentary projects for Netflix, BBC, and PBS, and has received recognition from major international awards including the Emmys, BAFTA, and Peabody.

🎙️ More inspiring words from @frontlinepbs exec producer @raneyaronson on Episode 236:
"We have to make sure that there's a place for the work that we do that doesn't actually exist in other places. All of this is happening, but all of us are still here. We're still telling the stories that matter, and we're a nonprofit, so we don't have a stakeholder environment. This is very important, especially for investigative journalism, in all the ways that frontline expresses it.
We do have a division now called Frontline Features, and @jackmacinnes and @itabazzam said "Frontline Features" on the stage at Sundance for the first time. They said the brand name and it just took my breath away because nobody had said it out loud. It was one of those breathtaking moments, that I realized, oh, wow, this does have momentum. This does have something behind it. So Frontline is expanding."
