MICHAEL MOLDS.

All of these molds were made @tinsleystudio for @tinsleymua for the Michael movie in late 2023 and the first part of 2024.

I made many more molds for the show than what is seen here, but this is a sampling of what the majority were compromised of: noses, cheeks, and chins for Michael, Joe, and Katherine Jackson.

I know that molds aren't considered as exciting or glamorous as other parts of the bts process, but they're very important to good prosthetic appliance edges, and the bridge from sculpture to the ultimate success of the finished makeup.

I did not sculpt anything seen here. That was all done by the very talented Christien Tinsley, @saekoyamazaki1985 and @bcorso.

THRILLER ZOMBIE TEETH.

All of these dentures were made @tinsleystudio by@tinsleymua for the film Michael. He designed, and 3D printed them all.

My contribution specifically was painting and glazing. Again, a very cool project to be a part of and to have contributed so much to!

THRILLER ZOMBIE SCULPT.

The coolest of the many opportunities given to me by @tinsleymua at @tinsleystudio during the making of Michael at his shop was getting to sculpt one of the background zombies for the recreation of the Thriller music video in the film.

There was only one screenshot of that particular zombie from the original video to go off of, so I did my best approximation of the sculpt under his guidance.

To top it all off, I was also allowed to go apply this makeup for him, which you can see the finished result of in my previous post.

A career highlight for sure.

MICHAEL. THRILLER MAKE-UP CREW.

I've seen the other posts making their way online, so I had to jump in on the fun.

First and foremost, thank you to @tinsleymua @tinsleystudio for having me on his very tiny hand chosen crew for the run of the whole show. Care and respect went into every detail, including the very cool custom boxes that contained our zombie makeup kits that you can see here.

Thanks to @bcorso for the opportunity to be included in such a fantastic group. He transported us back in time by having us do the makeup much the same way as they were done then: by hand, foam, glue, pax, & greaspaints.

I got to do a lot of work on the entirety of the Michael film, but by far, the highlight was getting to participate in the recreation of the Thriller music video.

Who of us of a certain age weren't massively influenced by this video, or more specifically, the behind the scenes making of VHS featuring @therickbaker? It certainly was a major contributor to me choosing makeup for life.

The video was painstakingly recreated over the course of two nights in May 2024 in the exact same downtown Los Angeles location as the original. It was a who's who of legendary makeup artists who you can see in the amazing group shot if you swipe.

Final thanks goes to my dancer extraordinaire and all-around great guy, my zombie @derrellbullock, who was just as excited to be there as I was and sat patiently and perfectly while I crafted his macabre visage.

More to come from Thriller, so stay tuned!

@shelbymichael_mua and I have been chipping away on prepping for another BIG makeupto be done on model @hoebojohnny.

Here, you can see some before & after comparisons of my seaming work on the foam latex cowl from @rbfxstudio from a sculpture by @millionaireclayboy.

It's been too long since we've done something big and ambitious like this. Stay tuned!

@michaelmovie wasone of the most enjoyable and challenging projects I’ve had the pleasure to work on. Enough thanks can’t be given to @bcorso for bringing @tinsleystudio on board. Prosthetic Design for a show like this was extremely difficult due to the nature of what we were trying to accomplish. Bill had a vision and I had a tremendous team supporting me and the work. I wanted to share thanks to the team. @brianjosephvandorn who project coordinated. @danmakesstuff who generated the molds. Will Thornton ran silicone prosthetics. @ericharrismua with dentures. @brookebarkermua who did amazing eyebrow pieces. @popespalette as lab technician. Roland @rbfxstudio ran beautiful foam for concert sequences. And last, my sculpting partner and Michael Jackson fanatic @saekoyamazaki1985 Saeko and I were like a human ping pong game of sculpting. A true collaboration. A huge thank you to everyone!

EYEBALLS!

I've been making eyes for a long time and I really enjoy it. Those in this post and every eye I've ever made are all by hand, from scratch.

No stickers. No computers. No printing.

I machine the inner and outer forms from acrylic on a lathe, mold them, and cast them in dental acrylic.

I hand paint the irises, hand lay the fibers for the blood vessels, and individually drop the pupils.

It's a labor-intensive process, no longer cost-effective, and often imperfect. I still love it.

These are all rejects from the last 20+ years that I've collected. They all have imperfections that make them unusable, but I keep them around anyway.

Maybe I'll make them into keychains someday.

TEETH.

I love making teeth! These dentures span over 25 years and are just a fraction of all the sets I've made.

Swipe on through and have a gander. Which are your favorites? Which ones do you recognize?

Do you need some teeth for your next project or know someone who does? Give me a shout.

Anybody interested in mold making? Then this is your post!

Here's a deep dive into the restoration and molding process for the Raleigh head. There are many ways to make a mold, but here's a detailed look at how I make mine.

I started with the 1630 and rigid foam model. The seam was awful, so I ground that off to be repaired after making the cases.

I screwed the base plate to a piece of wood and used a 2×4 to support the back of the head. Then I made my wooden "roller coaster" frame for the dividing wall.

Next came a layer of plastic and the white clay wall. More plastic over the model, fill in the undercuts with clay, then plastic over that. Then comes the "blanket" of clay and the strip keys.

Seal it, release it, fiberglass it, trim it, flip it over. Repeat for the back side.

Then I removed the model, cleaned up the seam on the sculpture with kleen klay, being careful to match the textures exactly. Then, the model goes back inside the front case, and the dividing wall is finished, and keys are added.

The now cleaned out case for the back is replaced, and silicone is poured. Once cured, I open it up and repeat for the front side.

For this project, I also cored the mold to produce an even skin thickness. You can see that in the final slides, along with some of the interior and exterior of the finished mold.

If you read this far, thank you! I'm not reinventing anything or breaking new ground. Just basic mold making, but maybe you enjoyed it or learned something new. Drop any questions in the comments!

RALEIGH PAINT: STEPS 5-8.

This is the second half, and completion of the paint work on this beautiful Mitch Devane sculpt. The hair has not yet been added, and the eyes are only placeholders and NOT the final eyes.

If you examine the photos, you'll see the changes at this point are very minute. That's because it's all about the fine details.

These details were accomplished with a double action airbrush with the nose cone removed, hand brushes, sponges, and yarn fibers.

The typical broken capillaries, freckles, moles, and veins are added. I also added some fine textures and colors by using pulled apart red toned yarn fibers and pressing or laying them into the cheeks, ears, forehead, and nose.

To add the random shapes, sizes, and patterns of sun damage, I like to fleck the brown shades on with a cut-off chip brush from varying distances, and then remove and/or accent as needed.

My favorite details on this old man are the round pinkish scars I added in select places. You often will see this in older folk who are having skin cancers or other blemishes removed and are in the process of healing.

It is a subtle addition, but I feel like those little details are the ones that make it feel familiar and recognizable.
