48 hrs in Kyoto (June, 2025)
Staying at a Ryokan proved to be one of the best decisions of this trip (Anubhav will disagree) because we got to experience what the concept of minimalism really means for Japanese people. The neighbourhood hardly had any tourists and the ryokan didn’t even have a lock. We checked in through a video of our host playing on the iPad and our keys placed on a sheet of paper beside it. The first thing I did once I entered the room was take the pillow and fall flat on the mat like Nobita did after coming home from school - a strange sense of nostalgia swept through me 😭. And thus began the journey which concluded with me taking an oath to be back in Kyoto for at least 15 days 🎎. From accidentally coming across the street where some parts of Memoirs of a Geisha were shot to finding an eighth generation kyo-yaki ceramic store and buying a matcha bowl from the master himself, it was an endless reverie. We also attended a 15 min private Maiko & Geiko (Geisha’s are called Geiko in Kyoto) performance at the Gion Kagai Art Museum and ended the day at Lennon Bar ❤️.
Mutilple museum visits and matcha drinking moments filled our day but it simply wasn’t enough.
On my last day in Japan, I took a Shinkansen from Osaka to Kyoto to find the sake cups I was eyeing while I was there and a ukiyo-e from 1868. Japan is living in both past and the future and it’s fascinating to see the blend of both. Counting days till I go back 🙈
