The Post collected some tips from sleep experts and evolving sleep research to help you get a better night’s rest.

Bumpy has both, in abundance. And the world is in desperate need.

An individual is dead after exchanging gunfire with Secret Service officers just outside the White House complex early Saturday evening, the Secret Service said.

A bystander was also struck in the exchange of bullets, the Secret Service said, but it is unclear whether by the suspect or shots returned from officers.

The unnamed individual fired shots at a checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, which is near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, according to the agency.

“A preliminary investigation indicates that as the individual approached, he removed a weapon from his bag and began firing at posted officers,” Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. “Secret Service police officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.”

Officials did not detail the extent of the bystander’s injuries nor outline the alleged shooter’s motivations behind the exchange of gunfire.

No Secret Service personnel were injured and President Trump, who was in the White House at the time of the incident, was not impacted.

Do you spend hours a day sitting in an office, driving a vehicle or even lounging around watching TV or playing video games? Chances are, you’ve experienced a stiff or achy back.

Your spine and the surrounding muscles aren’t meant to stay in the same position for long periods. “For most of human history, we’ve been constantly moving,” said Matt Weber, a clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy at Johns Hopkins Medicine. “We didn’t evolve for this level of inactivity.”

If you sit a lot, a few small tweaks can make a big difference. Here’s what physical therapists and orthopedic specialists want you to know about back pain from sitting and how to improve symptoms.

In 1961, Billie Jean King enrolled at what was then Los Angeles State College, but left after three years to pursue professional tennis.

She went on to become one of the sport’s most iconic players, reaching No. 1 in the world ranking and winning 39 Grand Slam titles across singles, doubles and mixed doubles. She also became a staunch advocate for gender equality and made history as the first female athlete to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Despite her long list of accolades, the unfinished degree bothered her. On May 18, at age 82, King walked across the stage at Cal State LA and collected the Bachelor of Arts in history she had begun more than six decades earlier.

“It is a privilege for me to be here as a member of your graduating class,” she said during her commencement speech. “Yeah, baby! Only 61 years!”

She explained why it held extra meaning for her.

“Like so many of today’s graduates,” King said, “I am the very first member of my immediate family to graduate from college.”

Six traveling “Freedom Trucks” are offering visitors an interactive look at U.S. history ahead of the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.

The mobile museum, housed inside an 18-wheeler, walks visitors through multimedia displays featuring George Washington, Paul Revere and timelines chronicling the American Revolution and the founding of the United States.

Some visitors, however, questioned the project’s funding and presentation of history. “They redirected 14 million dollars of taxpayer money that was supposed to go to libraries and museums into these trucks, which clearly tell a kind of one-sided story of history,” said Alexander Avila, a Miami visitor originally from New York City.

According to State Department figures, 6,069 people have been admitted to the U.S. as refugees since October. All but three were from South Africa.

The number reflects the wholesale transformation of the refugee program under the Trump administration, which early last year froze refugee admissions save for one specific group. Now nearly all those arriving under the program are White South Africans, many of them Afrikaner, an ethnic minority who speak Afrikaans and trace their roots to early Dutch settlers.

President Trump has touted his reshaping of the refugee program, framing it as a response to racial persecution and repeating false claims that “a genocide” is occurring in South Africa. “There’s a very horrible thing going on,” Trump told the audience at a conservative political conference in April. “They kill people if they’re White.”

Larry Bartlett ran U.S. refugee admissions for 15 years before retiring in 2024. He said that although it’s conceivable that a handful of Afrikaners might qualify as refugees, the current process is “not a refugee program.”

“They’re not looking across the world for people who are truly in need,” Bartlett said. “They’re looking at one specific country that the Trump White House has decided to focus on for political purposes.” He called it a “travesty” and an “abdication of moral responsibility.”

Melissa Littlepage, a mom to three boys, jokes that she’s no stranger to the lost and found of D.C.’s public bus system.

But when her middle son, Theo, left behind his trumpet the day before a school concert, she worried she wouldn’t be able to get it back in time.

She filled out an online claim with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

“I had faith in the system,” Littlepage said. “But in terms of getting it in time for his concert, I was like, ‘I don’t know about that bud.’”

Little did she know that the bus driver was already working to get it back to them.
