Combustibles don’t always look like the obvious culprits. Plastic patio furniture and toys (or even paddleboards) stored next to the house also pose a risk during wildfire season.

Spend a few minutes moving combustibles at least 10 metres away from your home. It’s a small step that could make a big difference.

Planning a camping trip? Jerry the Moose and Ember the FireSmart Fox are here with a few simple tips to help you keep your campfire safe and protect the places we all love.

Before lighting a campfire, always check BCwildfire.ca or use the BC Wildfire app, and check with local or Indigenous governments to see if there is a campfire ban or prohibition in the area you are visiting. If there isn’t an active campfire ban, you can usually have a safe campfire by doing the following:

- Always avoid having a campfire when it’s windy
- Use a designated fire ring
- Do not collect firewood in a park
- Use locally sourced firewood and avoid transporting it over long distances to help prevent the spread of invasive species
- Keep your fire smaller than 0.5 m high and 0.5 m wide
- Be equipped with at least 8 L of water or a hand tool
- Never leave your campfire unattended for any amount of time
- Ensure that your fire is completely extinguished before going to bed or leaving the area; the coals should be cool to the touch
- At home, store any leftover firewood at least 10 metres away from your home or other structures
- If a fire ban is in place, or if you want to be extra-cautious, use a CSA-rated propane campfire

A few simple precautions go a long way in protecting the places we all enjoy.

Cedar hedges look nice, but did you know they’re highly flammable? Due to their high natural resin and oil content, these hedges could put your home at risk during wildfire season.

Consider swapping cedar and other flammable vegetation for fire-resistant plants such as poplars, hawthorn, or maple.

You see a storage spot for your patio furniture. We see wildfire fuel.

Combustibles like propane, firewood, and even plastic patio furniture could put your home at risk during a wildfire. Storing combustibles at least 10 metres away from your home could help save your home.

A new chapter in community wildfire resilience is here.

The Local FireSmart Collective Program (LFCP) is replacing the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program in BC.

Why the change? Because wildfire resilience works best when programs reflect the unique needs of our communities. That’s why the LFCP is built specifically for British Columbians.

Delivered in partnership with @bcaarewards, whose continued support through the BCAA FireSmart Initiative helps strengthen community wildfire resilience across the province.
