After a sonic boom from a meteor shook houses across the Northeast early Saturday afternoon, NASA said Sunday the meteorite landed in Cape Cod Bay.

“This was a daytime bolide that produced a meteorite fall right in the middle of Cape Cod Bay,” NASA said in a statement Sunday. “This fall into water is technically called a ‘fishy squisher’ in uber-serious scientific terms.”

Around 2:06 p.m. Saturday, NASA confirmed a meteor “appears to have fragmented at an altitude of 40 miles over northeast MA and southeast NH.” The event caused a sonic boom and visible fireball in the sky across the a large swath of the Northeast United States and into Canada.

Fallen Boston firefighter Robert “BK” Kilduff Jr. had warned other firefighters to “get back” right before a portion of a Dorchester home collapsed, and he fell three stories.

Kilduff’s last selfless act mimicked his whole life, fellow Rescue 2 firefighter Lt. Greg Kelly said at his friend and colleague’s funeral service Monday.

“He’s leaving such a hole, I can’t explain it to you,” Kelly said.

Hundreds who filled The Cathedral of the Holy Cross listened to person after person talk about the ways that Kilduff helped others, while thousands lined Washington St. outside under what started out as a grey sky.

As the World Cup matches approach, ticket prices in the Boston area are hitting astronomical highs – but some deals may still be available for those still looking to make it to a game.

“France vs. Norway (June 26) is Boston’s most in-demand match by a wide margin – it’s the top seller in volume and commands an average resale price of around $1,245,” SeatGeek spokesperson Cameron Papp said of the Massachusetts matches. “The Mbappé-Haaland draw is doing the heavy lifting there.”

Prices for matches at the temporarily-renamed Boston Stadium in Foxboro range from just under $300 starting costs for the Norway vs. Iraq match-up on June 16 to well over $10,000 seats for the quarterfinal on July 9.

Massachusetts will host a total of seven World Cup matches between June 13 and July 9 in Foxboro, with over 2 million visitors and a massive economic impact expected to hit the region during the highly anticipated events.

E-bikes are leaving bicycle path users shouting e-nuff!

The Joint Committee on Transportation addressed the menace head-on Thursday in a bill filed by Gov. Maura Healey that would require an annual registration, liability insurance, and an official Massachusetts license plate for high-speed motorized bicycles.

That includes certain e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds, while also banning the popular products from bike lanes and walking and biking paths.

The bill, called An Act to Enhance the Safe Use of Micromobility Devices (S. 3077), was filed by Healey on May 4 and also sets a new regulatory framework for lower speed e-bikes, requiring those riders to follow bike lane and other restrictions and making helmets mandatory for riders 16 and under.

The mother of embattled ex-Healey aide LaMar Cook’s slain brother won $1 million on a new state lottery ticket game just days after he posted $25,000 bail for allegedly running a cocaine trafficking ring out of the governor’s western Massachusetts office.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Shortsleeve is slamming Gov. Maura Healey for this latest development, comparing it to when former Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger infamously “won” a $14 million lottery jackpot back in 1991.

Six months after millions of dollars of fine jewelry disappeared from a safe in Jamaica Plain, police say the man who stole the rings, watches, bracelets and necklaces once worked in the JP home as a caretaker.

The incident took place on Nov. 19, around midnight, when two suspects broke into the Allandale Rd. home and looted a locked safe room containing designer jewelry, including Tiffany and Co., Piaget, Chopard, and De Grisogono pieces, police said.

The individual items were valued between $1,000 and $850,000, “with the total loss estimated to be in the millions,” BPD said.

The Massachusetts town that said the cancellation of its Fourth of July celebration was “not related to funding” is looking to use surplus money to resurrect some of the holiday festivities.

The Rutland Select Board is set to meet on Monday to consider closing a warrant article that would fully fund the town’s budget for the first two months of the next fiscal year, July and August, a last-minute attempt to bring back its patriotic flair.

Select Board Chairwoman Sheila Dibb is leading the charge, as the Central Massachusetts town of around 9,000 people has entered the national spotlight for cancelling its Fourth of July celebration, in a year when America celebrates its 250th anniversary.

“This is a Hail Mary,” Dibb said at a Wednesday Select Board meeting. “Doug Flutie was before my time, but this is a Hail Mary for sure.”

It appears that FIFA is making some last-minute approvals with the World Cup just two weeks away.

Cities and towns across Massachusetts that waited for months for FIFA licensing approvals to host watch parties are finally starting to receive them, as other communities receive final public safety funding from the state.

Lexington is one of the communities that learned this week that its application to organize festivals around the global premier soccer event has been approved. The town came under the spotlight as it pressured FIFA with a sign at its visitors center that read, “Give Us a License to Celebrate Soccer.”

Former U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins reached enough signatures to be put on the ballot for her old Suffolk DA job, facing down the current DA Kevin Hayden.

“Just turned in my nomination papers,” Rollins said in a video posted to X Tuesday evening. “1,606 certified signatures from Boston, Chelsea, Winthrop, and Revere. Today it starts.”

Rollins, who resigned as U.S. Attorney in 2023 after ethics violations came to light, announced her decision to enter the race in April, stating “every moment in life — whether victory or defeat — is temporary.”

The former Suffolk DA will face incumbent candidate Kevin Hayden in the September primary, along with Linda Champion, a former counsel in the DA’s office under Hayden.
