i am honored to get to be a @time 100 Philanthropy honoree. they called me an innovator, but really, my friends and I just built a vehicle for other folks to step up and give as so many beloved neighbors faced crisis. mutual aid is the way forward. our interconnection and interdependence is radical and beautiful. i am proud to have gotten to bear witness to so much goodness in a time of such evil.

i have never been so sad to leave a house. our house on grayson was so dreamy until it wasn’t, when @stouthousegrayson opened and ruined our home, caused us a month of nightmares and lack of sleep. thanks doug, if you are reading this, for being the worst neighbor in history and costing me thousands of dollars on a move we never wanted to make until you moved in. on to greener, quieter pastures, but we will really miss this place.
People often ask me, “What can I doooooooo?” The answer is that we all have something that we can give to someone else. That is called mutual aid. In Episode 8 of “I SPENT 3 DAYS IN MINNEAPOLIS!” I met with organizer, artist, activist, author, website designer, Ashley Fairbanks (Asiniiwiikwe indizhinikaaz aka @ziibiing) to learn about mutual aid and the specific mutual aid needs of Minnesota in the wake of the federal government’s invasion. Ashley designed a website named @standwithminnesota to organize the asks of her fellow Minnesotans and the ways for us all to help.
The link for standwithminnesota.com is in my BIO.
The full episode featuring this interview will be out later this week.
Thanks again to @mcknightfdn for partnering with me on this.

349+ families. $463,217 in rent paid. Together we did that! YOU DID THAT!
If you live beyond Minnesota and you have contributed in any way to keeping our family, friends, and neighbors housed, you are also our neighbor.
Through Adopt-a-Rent, our community has kept over 349 families housed — all neighbor-to-neighbor, all peer-to-peer, all rooted in the simple belief that we take care of each other.
There are still hundreds of families facing eviction and now we know what’s possible when more of us step up and step in to keep each other safe.
If you’ve been wondering how to make a tangible difference right now, this is it. Adopt a rent. Gather a few friends. Pool your resources. Cover one month. Keep someone housed.
We’ve done it over 349 times already.
Let’s keep up.
We get there together and we leave no one behind.

Last month, people from around the world saw Minnesota in the headlines and gave to funds to help keep Minnesotans impacted by the ICE occupation safe, fed, and housed.
Unfortunately, much of the media has left, and ICE is still in Minnesota. They’ve shifted their tactics, but people are still recovering, still trying to stay safe. All this to say—March rent is looming and people do not have the money to pay.
It is pretty hard, through traditional means, to get people the rent they need in time to eviction. So in January we connected over 120 families with donors to directly pay their rent. It was amazing, and it worked. Faster than anything else we’ve tried.
So for March, we are taking the campaign public. If you want to fundraise, or can afford to give $500 or more, there’s a form on standwithminnesota.com/adoptarent you can fill out so we can give you a rent to pay directly to the tenant. Our list of rents is populated by organizations and trusted leaders who cannot help these families in other ways.
With no room in Minnesota shelters for families currently, avoiding eviction could not be more critical. Every dollar donated to rent funds and every rent adopted is changing lives, and saving tens of thousands of dollars it would take to get a family rehoused.
Thank you all for the continued attention and support.

February 4 is World Read Aloud Day, and Way to Grow is celebrating by sharing a new favorite: “This Land” by Ashley Fairbanks @ziibiing and illustrated by Bridget George @bridgetsioln
This picture book invites young readers to ask an important question: Who lived where you are before you got there? It gently teaches that the land we live on, from our backyards to our schools, are the traditional homelands of Indigenous nations.
Reading aloud builds connection. It opens worlds, sparks curiosity, and creates shared moments for children and grown-ups to connect in new ways and about new ideas.
How are you celebrating World Read Aloud Day? 🧡📚

I put together a website aimed at folks outside of Minnesota that has a giant list of places to give to in Minnesota right now. GoFundMe campaigns, mutual aid funds, organizations, and more. I also included a list of places to look to for news about what is happening there, and a growing list of testimonies from people to show the reality of what life is like as ICE continues to escalate their actions across the state.

i hope everyone finds a love that makes them feel known. that makes them feel held and safe and treasured. happy anniversary, my guy. here is to one million more.

tomorrow is my birthday and i feel tremendously good about entering the last year of my thirties. what a decade: fell madly in love, got married, gained a step-child, wrote two books (and writing a third!), built up a career i love, moved across the country by myself, helped a bunch of cool candidates get elected, wildly changed my life with somatic experiencing, got the perfect dog…it’s all been uphill. i hope i get lucky enough to keep feeling that way about the next decade too.
for now, here are my adorable birthday nails.

when i was a kid, my dad released a book that contained tons of questions about your partner, so they could fill it out and you could know all their favorite things and sizes and everything without having to ask over and over again. yesterday i was thinking, what if we had something similar for friends, so we could know how to take care of each other. so tonight i made it a thing. i would love to get feedback from folks! i would love you to use it with your friends and partners! i am working on a shareable template version, but for now, check it out if you have a second and tell me another favorite to add besides color.
