CROCUS is a multisensory experience so you should really try the aperitif by @drinkvisuals or at LEAST listen to the album in full while you close your eyes and imagine wonders. @ceremonyofseasons

On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it’s Walker Farrell! We’re celebrating the start of spring with Walker’s new album, “Crocus,” out now on Ceremony of Seasons, and after talking about that, living through Hurricane Helene and its aftermath, and more, we get into the weeds with D Train, Miles Davis, Gang Starr, Joanna Newsom, Vivien Goldman, Kermit the Frog, Parliament, and more!

Listen via Foxy Digitalis or wherever you listen to podcasts.

CROCUS is out now!!
This multisensory ode to spring depicts the first 24 hours of the season as heard by a 1/8” tall garden dweller on the most beautiful day imaginable. I composed the music over many months, taking the seasonal project assignment (first given when we were in the wake of Hurricane Helene) as license to imagine the weather in a purely positive way, something so difficult to do in this weather catastrophe era where the world is run by psychopaths who hate nature and everything in it. I hope that it can also help you to find beauty in the change of seasons. I am so grateful to the weirdo arts community of Asheville for supporting me and each other through the seasons.
The paired aperitif by @drinkvisuals gives you the literal flavor of crocus as it is infused with saffron giving it a bright yellow glow. I believe the lone cassette is sold out but you can still pick up the full package, or obviously listen to the album digitally!

On Thursday, March 19th, we will yet again celebrate the change in season with a ritual for the senses. @eulogyavl will host our ongoing tradition, 3+ years strong, of pairing VISUALS wine with the music of Asheville’s most visionary experimentalists.

The Spring edition features the playful, jazz inspired sound world of synthesist @walkerfarrell, and simultaneously acts as a preview party for his upcoming tape, “Crocus”.

Walker Farrell’s formative music experience was nightly sessions in bed with a cassette tape of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, provided by his parents as a way to keep his chronically insomniac mind occupied. The many inventive melodic lines on the tape, especially John Coltrane’s bold entrance on “So What,” soundtracked imaginary movies in his head. With Crocus, Walker scores a new imaginary film, a sonic depiction of the first 24 hours of spring as experienced by a 1/8” tall garden dweller. Taking structural, musical, and spiritual guidance from many different moments in the artistic life of John Coltrane, Crocus is a celebration of the complexity and beauty of life as it boldly returns to triumph over the death and desolation of winter.
We are extremely excited to help usher this new work into the world. To listen, follow link in bio.

Limited edition cassettes will be available at the show courtesy of @ceremonyofseasons, in addition to a new aperitif wine formulated in collaboration with Walker called VISUALS Like A Thick Tapestry of Motion.

@tony_rolando, Sarah Louise and @the_forestfloor will join the ritual in support. The concept of terroir is one synonymous with wine, representing a sensory experience with a distinct sense of place in time. This is the sonic equivalent, focusing explicitly on the surprisingly rich abstract sound art scene in this endlessly impressive mountain bastion of creativity we call home.

This is a free show and free wine samples will be available. Link to RSVP in bio. Walker Farrell and Spring are both worth celebrating. See you there.

Stuff that didn’t make it
It’s cliche, but the stuff is just stuff. Even the stuff that brings us joy and beauty and inspiration. Now that I found (briefly) a way to connect to the internet, I am so thankful to share with you that my family is safe, we have access to food and water and we are close to friends and we are all helping each other out.
Our greater community is devastated for the foreseeable future. There is no forecast of when the city or county will have running water again. Orgs like @firestormcoop and @manna_foodbank are helping people on the ground. My friend @_world.of.echo_ has been sharing mutual aid requests that can help out badly hit individuals and families directly.
It’s easy to think that disasters only happen elsewhere, even without realizing you’re doing it!
