Happy Heavenlit Birthday DeeDee (my grandma)

I don’t fit into the tiny, polished mold of what people imagine when they think of a Black classical musician-let alone the “safe” version that seems to make others more comfortable. I’m not the quiet, agreeable figure who blends in without making waves. I challenge expectations. I speak up with pushback, offer commentary, and give constructive criticism when it’s warranted. I’m routinely advocating for musicians even when no one is advocating for me. My style reflects who I am; I might show up dressed with a touch of hip-hop flair, and I have the ability to switch into improvisation at a moment’s notice. But because I’m outspoken and unapologetically fight for my place in this space, I’m often labeled as “too aggressive.” Perhaps my physical presence; a 6-foot frame, broad shoulders, and an unrelenting spirit, only amplifies those perceptions. Yet, this is who I am: a persistent soul determined to carve out my rightful place without compromise. I am too old to still be fighting this fight though, if I was cleared to be able to walk my viola up into my attic for a time I would. For now, it sits in my corner and holds my planned workday fits.
