I had always been curious about the situation there, and my desire to truly understand it led me on a journey that would forever change my perspective.
It wasnโt logistically easy getting there. It was a case of knowing someone โinsideโ with the right connections to get in.
We stayed with a Palestinian family who welcomed us into their home. The first thing that struck me was their generosity. Despite having very small portions of rationed food, they shared what little they had with us. It was a poignant demonstration of their hospitality, even in the face of adversity.
I discovered that daily water supply was a constant struggle. Showers had to be brief, limited to just a minute, because the water tank on the roof had meager supplies. The Israeli government controls their water resources, often turning it off as a form of punishment, leaving Palestinians with limited access to this basic necessity.
Walking through the streets, I couldn't ignore the imposing concrete wall that divided communities. The watchtowers looming above, and armed checkpoints, were a constant reminder of the tensions in the region.
