It happens regularly that I'm ambushed by the right person in the right place and have very little time to take a portrait. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her sitting in a crowded subway surrounded by fellow passengers. Once alone, I seized the opportunity and took this portrait between two stops, where she had to get off.

Sometimes, it’s a matter of recognition, energy, or curiosity that draws me to someone for a portrait. For me, solitude and connection often exist in a tense balance, one I constantly strive to navigate. The space between the photographer and the person being portrayed is intangible yet endlessly fascinating to me. That’s why I love looking at portraits so much—there’s no risk of anything being spoiled by words. For me, creating a portrait is like scratching the surface, opening up space for imagination, and wondering about the person beneath the appearance.

Geertje stond op 4 mei op de Dam en werd door de politie gemaand haar ‘protestbord’ af te geven. Oh ironie, mensen met een stille boodschap werden zonder pardon afgevoerd. Misschien is de huidige vorm van herdenken in deze tijd lastig verdedigbaar? Ik trof haar een dag later op de pont naar de Buiksloterweg. Ze was net terug van het bureau waar ze werd herenigd met haar urgente boodschap. Mensen als Geertje bieden verzet, troost, schreeuwen niet en onze gedachtewisseling voelde als een verademing. Ze bestaan en zijn overal; mensen met een warm hart.
