Alright! I’ve had some more followers since I last introduced myself so I figured a little re-intro might be a thing? 🙃🫶🏼

Anyway, I’m Nic!

I make unique jewellery and metalcrafts using industrial offcut from my better half’s bespoke furniture business, @buildingstuffsincebirth

Working with metals helped me reconnect with myself during a really challenging time in my life; applying scientific principles while being creative transformed from a mindful activity into a passion and purpose for me. The process of forming new connections in metals seemed to coincide on a spiritual level with me making new connections of my own; if that makes sense?!

I created Second Spring to share my love of creating with reclaimed metals.Second Spring has multiple meanings; beyond repurposing “scrap” it’s about regenerating and reconnecting with myself as I continue to navigate the challenges of peri menopause.

These industrious little creatures are some of my favourites of the insect world; they mesmerise me for hours in our garden and beyond 🤩🫶🏼

Without them, we’d be ruined.

I use beeswax to design some of my pieces before I sand cast them in metal; it’s very different to modern jewellers waxes and doesn’t contain any nasty chemicals or plastics since it’s a natural product. It can be tricky to work with, especially when it’s very cold or very warm!

Hallmarking is a form of quality assurance that verifies an item meets the legal standards associated with precious metals.

However, unhallmarked items are not necessarily fake or poor quality; they may simply be exempt from requiring this verification.

This image shows my registered hallmark;
NCJ is my makers mark, unique to only me
925 denotes this piece has been verified as meeting the standards of sterling silver
⚓️ the anchor is the identification mark of Birmingham Assay Office where this piece was certified

There are other optional marks that can be purchased when I take items to be assayed, but these ones are the essential marks in order for me to legally sell jewellery pieces labelled as sterling silver when they weigh more than 7.78grams.

My brass, steel and copper jewellery is not required to be hallmarked. Unhallmarked items are often misunderstood to be of inferior quality (in part due to the influx of mass produced plated jewellery from overseas), but this is definitely not the case! Some metals may be considered more valuable than others but they are all precious resources that I treat with care when I’m making your jewellery 🫶🏼

@sustainabrum have planned what looks to be a brilliant event this weekend at our favourite tap room @atticbrewcotap 🫶🏼

Championing a bunch of great independent traders that are committed to doing their best to run businesses with minimal impact on our planet 🫶🏼

So why am I there?!! Working with metals definitely expends precious resources (I’d be a bit lost without gas for soldering and casting!) but I’m trying my best to challenge perceptions of “scrap”, less “precious” metals, minimise waste, repurposing, making slow, meaningfully and giving my time to support local environmental projects 🫶🏼 There’s always more we can all do and we can help each other. Stick it to the big corp and mass produced ugliness in our world and come say hi to support all these top folk doing lovely things 🫶🏼
