We cannot accept this as normal. Join the mothers and families seeking justice on May 9-10 at a rally and spiritual event in Los Angeles.

What if a mental health or substance use crisis didn’t end in handcuffs?

Join us on March 25 to learn how groups like Freedom Community Center are creating real alternatives to incarceration - making sure people end up getting help instead of in jail.

When sheriffs are tasked with responding to these and other health crises, it forces deputies to make judgment calls on behaviors and conditions that they are not trained or certified to handle. Their tools for response are also often limited, and as a result, they default to arrest and incarceration. This leads to local jails filled with people with needs that they don’t have the training or expertise to support.

Communities nationwide are proving there's a better way.

📣 We’re back! Our 7 Demands to Reimagine the Sheriff webinar series continues next week as we dig into Demand 4 focused on sheriffs’ role in ending pretextual traffic stops.

Across the country, Black drivers are disproportionately stopped and searched by law enforcement under the guise of minor traffic infractions. These unnecessary stops can quickly and fatally escalate– between 2017-2022, police killed more than 600 people during traffic stops.

We’ll be joined by Live Free Illinois (@livefreeillinois_) to explore their insights on the issue, discuss why these stops threaten public safety, and share how advocates can pressure sheriffs to prevent pretextual traffic stops.
