🌊 Happy International Day for Biological Diversity! Did you know that Earth is home to at least 8.7 million unique, identified species? That number may only scratch the surface is subject to change as many species exist deep in rainforests and oceans, unable to be touched by humans. In fact, the ocean is home to more than half of all life on Earth, yet 80% of our oceans are unexplored and unmapped!
.
🐟 Scientists depend upon NCEI’s voluminous archive of ocean data to identify new species of marine life. The Census of Marine Life was a ten-year, worldwide effort to record and discover new ocean species, habitats and connections. The Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) was created to organize and share this data. NCEI worked alongside ocean scientists to guarantee that this important ocean data will be archived and shared with scientists now and in the future.
.

▶️ As the winter cold fades, we’ve got a Rhode Island record to remind you that the cold isn't quite a memory yet.

▶️ On February 22–23, a storm produced unprecedented snowfall across the State of Rhode Island.

▶️ With unanimous agreement and based on a mountain of snowy evidence, the SCEC determined that the 42-inch snow depth at Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport ties with the current Rhode Island record held by Foster from February 7, 1978.

▶️ At the link in our bio: Learn more about how the committee verified the snow depth record AND view our web story about the storm that created BOTH a snow depth record and 24-hour snowfall record in Rhode Island.

Check out NCEI’s Global Temperature and Precipitation Analysis for April. Here are the highlights:

🌍 April was the fourth-warmest April on record.

🌎 The Northern Hemisphere had a below-average snow cover extent, driven by deficits in Eurasia.

🌏 Both poles experienced below-average sea ice extent, with the Arctic having its second-smallest April extent on record.

🌍 Global tropical cyclone activity was near average with four named storms.

Did April showers bring May flowers? For much of the U.S., the answer is “it depends.”

Good thing we have the April U.S. temperature and precipitation report ready. Some highlights:

➡️ The U.S. experienced its third-warmest April on record, with record-warm average temperatures observed across more than 700 counties and affecting more than 50 million people.

➡️ The last 12 months (May 2025–April 2026) were warmer than any other 12-month period on record for the CONUS.

➡️ The Upper Midwest region experienced its wettest April on record, receiving approximately twice its average precipitation.

➡️ Severe to exceptional drought covered over 40% of the U.S., with the Southeast experiencing its greatest extent on record.

🌪️The updated Advanced Dvorak Technique-Hurricane Satellite (ADT-HURSAT) dataset is here! Created by @noaa and #CIMSS at @uwmadison, ADT-HURSAT provides reliable hurricane intensity records for 1978 through 2024. These reliable long-term records help communities, businesses, and scientists understand how storms develop and how risks change over time.
.
🌧️As the 2026 hurricane season approaches, this historical data can improve risk analysis and storm preparedness to enhance #PublicSafety and help businesses protect supply chains to ensure essential goods are available.
.
🌀NOAA environmental products like ADT-HURSAT help businesses and communities plan ahead, reduce storm impacts, and protect lives, property, and local economies. Learn more about ADT-Hursat at the link in our bio.

The U.S. and Texas are entering peak hail season! Storm Prediction Center data tells us that Texas has led the nation in hail reports for the last decade. It isn’t every day that Texans see a record-breaking hailstone, though.

On June 2, 2024, a supercell thunderstorm developed in Swisher County, Texas. A large hailstone was discovered beside the road by storm chasers who were tracking the storm. A committee of scientists have verified a new Texas hailstone record of 7.1 inches in diameter.

Learn more about the record and how the committee verified the hailstone size at the link in our bio.
