Murray Hill always knew who he was, even if he still doesn’t have a word for it. “There’s no gender ID that is called Everything Under The Kitchen Sink. So I just go by Murray.”

During a night out at a gay bar in Boston in the early 1990s, Hill photographed drag icons who were in town from New York —Lypsinka, Girlina, and Lady Bunny — performers he would eventually share the bill with decades later. After moving to New York City to pursue a graduate degree at the School of Visual Arts, he detected an untapped market. Drag king culture had plenty of attitude, but nobody was playing it for laughs. So he filled it. And he took the name from the neighborhood where he was living at the time.

He started making appearances at drag clubs in 1996, while still enrolled in his MFA program and working a day job as a visual artist. In 2005, The New York Times called him “the leader of the downtown world,” noting that his performances regularly attracted celebrity guests like John Waters, Liza Minnelli, Alan Cumming, Joan Rivers, Boy George, and Fran Drescher.

In March 2025, he was awarded the Trailblazer Award at the 13th annual Queerties, presented to him by his Somebody Somewhere co-star Tim Bagley.

It took nearly 30 years for him to break into mainstream projects with HBO, Hulu, Prime Video, CBS.He was inducted into PAPER magazine’s Nightlife Hall of Fame and selected as OUT magazine’s Top 100 influential performers — twice.

His Memoir, Showbiz! My Life as a Middle-Aged Man will be released this year.

The culture is finally catching up.
