A few years ago I spent a month at @eyesonmainstreetinc ‘s residency program (which extremely sadly had to be discontinued) in Wilson NC and a lot of things went wrong including an ultra short layover at JFK where I let my film be x-rayed which ruined it pretty badly. Went through my archive and got to the point where I realize the photos are pretty good beyond the damage, so here’s a few.

Last year I had the opportunity to photograph some of the people behind the thriving cultural scene at Sectie-C in Eindhoven, as well as portray the developers that are responsible for the newly developed neighborhood that is going to take shape here, where creativity and comfort of living will go hand in hand. Automatically my eye was drawn to the everyday spaces and objects in Sectie-C as well. Read the interviews at @nieuwsectie_c. Thank you for the assignment @heyheydehaas en @ten_brinke

‘On the Road,’ captured during an aimless drive through Spain by photographer Mark Rammers (@markrammers). At home on the road, he finds beauty in the ordinary while witnessing the continuous evolution of natural and man-altered landscapes.

“To me, the essence of discovery is not found in spaces of obvious beauty. While on the road, I usually only decide on a destination, never on the exact route. I keep my eyes peeled to the asphalt and its periphery, expecting to encounter intricate details or untold stories - not designed to be attractive, but simply fulfilling their part in the larger concept of the malleable world.”

Together with @therealimogenlepere we spent a week on Santo Antao, a hikers heaven in the Cape Verde archipelago. If you’re looking for year round summer, a jet-leg free journey and want to dip into a Western Africa island atmosphere, look no further. Read more about it in @condenasttraveller, link in bio.

When in Pakistan last year, I anticipated on a week-long journey to the semi-nomadic Mohana on Lake Manchar. Due to a long chain of events, I ended up spending about 4 hours with them instead. I know spending 4 hours in a community isn’t even remotely enough to start scratching the surface of what being in this community for a longer period, let alone living here, is like (not that a week would have permitted me any rights to say I understand what it would be like either, but still). I did end up taking some photo’s and see with my own eyes in what hopeless conditions people here have to live. It’s a story of how power dynamics, climate change and virtually zero access to any basic needs such as sanitation, healthcare and schooling has nearly wiped out an almost 5000-year old culture. In the end, it’s maddeningly unfair, but people live. They’re alive, they care for their community, their families, their homes and their boats. Their daily grind is incomprehensibly brutal but I believe sharing only a few moments and a meal with eachtoher did make the day worth living.

Some other photographers have done a great job recently in reporting on it, such as @guillaumepetermann, so if you’d like to learn more, find his great piece in @guardian.

The Dutch photographer Mark Rammers arrives in Wijk aan Zee expecting a community under siege — and finds instead a town that knows how to hold warmth and danger in the same hands.

Wijk aan Zee is a Dutch seaside town built on contradiction. Tucked between the grey North Sea and tall dune grasses that dance in the westerly wind, it is also the neighbour of Tata Steel — the largest industrial polluter and number one emitter of greenhouse gases in the Netherlands, which is simultaneously the region’s largest employer. The headlines tell one story: a community at the mercy of a steelmaking behemoth, its air contaminated, its future uncertain. What Rammers found when he arrived was something the headlines had not prepared him for. @markrammers
