Stories and reflections on recent events in the Mediterranean, including the “f.lotta,” the flotilla, ship-to-ship communications, and compass readings. A journey that weaves together experiences of navigation and solidarity, paths of resistance, and collective memories—from the sea as a frontier to the sea as a space of connection and freedom.

This Friday 8 May Disruption Network Lab is hosting The Sun Rises Over Gaza: Tracing the Eastward Route of the Flotilla. 🌅

An evening of stories and reflections on recent events in the Mediterranean, including the flotilla f.lotta_, ship-to-ship communications, and compass readings with filmmaker & media activist Manolo Luppichini.

The event combines political testimony with poetic storytelling and technological imagination. Rather than presenting the flotilla and Gaza solely as distant geopolitical issues, it reframes them as lived, sensory, and relational experiences.

By weaving together maritime narratives, digital infrastructures (like Gazaweb and the GASH hubs), and collective storytelling, the event speaks across disciplines: art, media, activism, and technology. We invite students, activists, artists, technologists, and socially engaged audience to join us.

By extending the journey from the sea to the network cables, the project expands the idea of navigation into the digital realm. The creation of Gazaweb Social Hubs positions connectivity itself as a form of resistance and reconstruction. In this sense, the event aligns with the theme by exploring how infrastructures - whether maritime or digital - can be reclaimed as tools for autonomy, education, and collective future-building.

📡 But navigation isn't just by boat. Discover how Gazaweb created GASH (Gazaweb Social Hubs), two permanent technological lighthouses in Gaza City and Khan Younis University. After networks and classrooms were destroyed, emergency hotspots kept life alight. Now comes stability: reliable connection for students to study, take exams, call distant family, and train local technicians to manage the network.

From the sea to fiber optic cables. From flotilla to router. The Levant is a direction, courage, and light that always rises in the east.
