The May issue of The National’s Luxury magazine is here. In this issue we explore a life well-lived, which in our era of constant busyness is really about taking a moment to contemplate the world around us.

Take Josh Sims’ feature on the curious world of food design. As life accelerates, we spend less time considering what fuels us. His piece forces us to stop and think. Likewise, in Sarah Maisey’s dispatch from a whirlwind Milan Design Week, she finds a rare refuge of reflection at the Miu Miu Literary Club.

This month’s cover shoot takes over a strikingly beautiful Umm Suqeim villa for the day, where the home’s quiet nooks and hidden corners inspire a kind of still confidence in the whole team throughout the shoot day.

Elsewhere, we sit down with Tommy Hilfiger, who at 74 is more assured than ever in his relationship with the zeitgeist. We talk about longevity, fame and his enduring sense of curiosity. We also meet some of the world’s most influential perfumers – and explore their new outpost in Dubai – to understand the creativity and care behind the scents that transport us.

At the other end of the sensory spectrum – but no less intricate – we dive into the noise and adrenalin of Formula One racing. We look at its link to high watchmaking and luggage craftsmanship through Louis Vuitton, where precision and engineering are also acts of deep contemplation.

In travel, we venture over to Mauritius to explore a lesser-seen side of the popular islands, one that pays homage to its complicated past. And in our One Last Thing questionnaire, Saudi actress and writer Sarah Taibah reflects on the foods and scents that carry her back to childhood.
